Masking predefined sections of sensitive data within uploaded SharePoint files
Hello,
For incoming data to be uploaded to SharePoint, the intent is to have certain instances of sensitive info (e.g. credit card numbers) obfuscated before being uploaded. Rather than masking the full file or document, however, it would be ideal to have only the instance of sensitive data within the file masked rather than the full document, as it appears to be the case with sensitivity labels.
Is there a method, ideally through Purview compliance, to have sensitive labels (or individual instances of masking / removal) applied to subsets of data within files while leaving the rest of the document as is? Alternatively, what other methods are available to have such individual instances of sensitive data automatically masked prior to being uploaded to SharePoint?
Thank you,
Alex

Hi, amandel-52
To my knowledge, there is no true data obfuscation tool within Purview. There is no way to achieve this with sensitivity labels. Their encryption applies to the entire file and there is no way to specify only specific content within the file.
So that I better understand the approach, what is the concern with using labels to encrypt the entire file?
- folucianMicrosoftSyntex has an annotation feature that you may use to do that. But as miller34mike said there is no such tool in purview.
