Hi Kris
You can definitely move back to the basic mailboxes and still keep your domain. The key is to first migrate and back up your data, then release the domain from Microsoft 365 before Combell can reconfigure it.
High-Level Steps
- Identify and Back Up Data
- List all mailboxes and shared mailboxes
- Back up emails, OneDrive, and any other data
- Prepare Domain for Removal in Microsoft 365
- Change all accounts to the .onmicrosoft.com address
- Remove the custom domain from all services and groups
- Remove Domain from Microsoft 365 Tenant
- Use the Admin Center to detach the domain once it’s no longer in use
- Update DNS to Point Back to Combell / or wherever you want
- Remove Microsoft 365 DNS records
- Add Combell’s basic email DNS records
- Restore Data and Test
- Import backed-up emails into Combell mailboxes
- Confirm email flow and access
Once the domain is fully removed from Microsoft 365 and DNS is updated, Combell can activate your basic mail service again.
