query access on phone format

I have a query in access that is querying a input mask field for phone number.  I have looked at what the filed I have set query to is for actual date, and it shows that my phone number field is actual data only i.e. 5121231234 instead of (512) 123-1234.  The query is against a input mask table field.  I read that in a filter this situation is fixed by doing filter "as formatted', but I don't see how to do this in a query.
