ERROR 3405 trying to COMPACT AND REPAIR an Access (2205 15225.20204) database

I am receiving ERROR 3405 (Could not use ... file already in use) trying to COMPACT AND REPAIR an Access (2205 15225.20204) database

I have tried several workarounds including

* Copy the .dbf file to a new name ... open access ... and try it on the new name

* Disable virus Protection

Does anyone have any other suggestions

    I was able to resolve the issue by removing virus protection ... compressing the database (.mdb not .dbf ... I worked for Oracle for too many years) ... it took the database from 135mb ... down to 21mb

    I reinstalled virus protection ... and this time on install ... added an exclusion for MSACCESS.EXE ... and ran the Compact and Repair again without issue
