We’re excited to announce that we’ve started rolling out the ability for multiple authors to collaborate on SharePoint pages. Multiple authors will be able to edit the same page at the same time, without having to take turns. Authors can see real-time changes made by others as they happen in pages, sections, and web parts.

After an author starts editing a page, they can see if other authors are also editing by viewing their avatar in the command bar.  Changes made by authors are saved automatically every few seconds. If authors want to leave edit mode, they can select Save and close.

Version history has also been improved to enhance support for collaborative authoring. To undo more changes or changes made by other users, authors can restore a prior version from Version History (under Page details)

Frequently asked questions

When will this happen?

We have begun rolling out to targeted release tenants and expect to complete by late July 2024. We expect general availability rollout to start in August.

Track the feature status with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 124853.

How will this affect your organization?

Before this rollout, only one author can edit a page. While an author is editing the page no other user can edit until the author publishes or saves their draft.

After this rollout, authors will have the ability to edit a page or news post while others are editing as well.

What do you need to prepare?

You do not need to do anything to prepare for this update, but you may want to let your authors know about this new capability.

  • Really great feature and very useful for us.

    1. We need to get coauthoring at webpart level also which is highly required in our business case. Is there any alternative to achieve this functionality?

    2. Any documentation available for what are the features going to be released on Page coauthoring?

I found this one which has similar info what this video has - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/collaborate-on-sharepoint-pages-and-news-with-coauthoring-91d7dc25-37c3-44a4-99da-f552e0f9cfe9#:~:text=Coauthoring%20on%20a%20page%20or,%2C%20or%20real%2Dtime%20collaboration.

If they choose to submit for approval anyway, the others that are editing will be put into read-only.

We don't currently have inline page commenting like in Word, it's something on our roadmap as we understand how important it is when collaborating with others on content. We do have page comments but those are for viewers and only available in view mode.

  • cdsmythe007 If Page Editor 1 clicks "Publish" while others are actively editing, they get a warning informing them that there are others editing and perhaps they should wait until they are done. If they choose to publish anyway, Page Editor 2 will get put into read-only and the changes they had made up to that point would get included in the published page. Editor 2 can then go into editing mode to continue but those changes would be in the next version.

  • How will this new feature affect page approval workflows? If multiple editors save their own work, this will apparently cause several different approval processes to be triggered?

Can we have the option to "enable inline page commenting" on SharePoint site?

I'm assuming anyone with Contribute access to those pages will be able to see the inline comments and because we apply a decentralised publishing model with over 180 authors having Contribute access on Site Pages, I'm picturing 180+ authors having visibility of any comments on any page they can edit?

So, Page Editor1 clicks "Publish" and the page displays the unfinished changes of the other logged in editor Page Editor2?

Or does the webpart that Page Editor2 was working in not get published and just rolls into the next version?
