Vilas Dhar, President of the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, AI ethicist, and global policy expert, spoke with Kate Behncken, CVP of Microsoft Philanthropies, at the Global Nonprofits Leaders Summit. His insights into the future of AI and the potential for impact to nonprofits were an invaluable part of the Summit.
Vilas shares his vision of responsible AI innovation that keeps people at its center. But beyond responsible AI adoption frameworks, he makes a larger point that fair innovation starts with a foundation in a fair society. In his words, “Ethical AI doesn't mean anything to me but if we can have a conversation about building an ethical society that's empowered by AI… (bringing) technology professionals into a room with civil society, with community leaders, with government officials, and says ‘What are we designing for?’ – that gives me a lot of hope.”
