it continues to amaze me how disconnected MS is in the real world....this is what Microsoft Support after massive back and forth shared...I resolved the issue by going back to Classic Teams until the New Teams is ready.

Thank you for your response. I am glad you were able to resolve the issue and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused for you. 

 

Regarding your question, please note that the "Open with Desktop App by Default" will be available in the New Microsoft Teams when Microsoft completes the New Teams App upgrade. 

The New Teams App is still in Preview mode and all features will be available when the upgrade is completed.
