Hi, Microsoft 365 Insiders! I’m Anqi Chen, a Senior Product Manager on the Teams team. I’m excited to let you know about a new feature in Microsoft Teams that alerts you to your microphone’s volume during meetings.

New microphone volume indicator in Teams

If you’re constantly asking, “Can you hear me?” while on video calls, your life just got a whole lot easier! The new microphone volume indicator for Microsoft Teams on Windows and Mac provides you with real-time visual feedback on your audio levels, minimizing interruptions and enhancing your confidence and effectiveness in meetings. This feature can be especially handy if you’re in a crowded space or testing out a new computer or external mic.

How it works

  1. Start or join a Teams meeting.
  2. Notice that the Mic button appears in the right-hand corner of the toolbar. When you speak, the mic levels will move up and down to indicate that your microphone is working. If the levels don’t move, that means your microphone is not picking up any audio.
  3. To find out more about your audio settings, such as the microphone and speaker you’re currently using, and to toggle on spatial audio or noise suppression, select the down arrow next to Mic.

Availability

To use this new feature, you must be a member of the Teams Public Preview or Microsoft 365 Targeted release and use the new Teams client on Windows or Mac.

To enable your Teams client for the Public Preview, IT administrators must enable Show preview features in their update policy. You can learn more here.

For Targeted release, global admins can go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and give access to a select set of individuals or the entire organization. Learn more here.

Feedback

We want to hear from you! Select Settings and more > Feedback in the top-right corner of the Teams app, and then select either Report a problem, Give a compliment, or Suggest a feature to share your thoughts.

Having this *after* joining a meeting is too late. It should be at the lobby so people can test before they join a meeting.

We need an option to manage the volume of individual speakers, from 1% to 500% of whatever they send, like some clients (e. g. Discord) have. Some speakers are too quiet, some too loud, and it ruins a meeting if all I do is constantly toggle the volume of my desktop audio like a DJ, to have normalized audio levels. It is not just feasible to count on the speaker's responsibility to get a decent audio setup, tune up their mic volume, etc.
