Hello, Microsoft 365 Insiders! I’m Stéphanie Visser, a Product Manager on the Word team. I’m excited to share that we are adding more value to Microsoft 365 Copilot’s document summary in Microsoft Word for Windows, for Mac, and for the web. This update not only gives enterprise customers a clear, detailed summary of the document’s content, but also provides key insights, activity and comment highlights, and content suggestions.
More insights from Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word’s document summary
Understanding, collaborating on, and refining a document takes time and effort. Microsoft 365 Copilot can speed up the entire process – and its summary capabilities in Word for enterprise customers just got better!
The new summary at the top of your documents gives you more options for skimming and digesting long materials, collecting important information or stats, monitoring edits or collaborator input, or improving your writing skills and content quality. Plus, it updates when the document is refreshed, helping you stay informed and in control.
With the advanced Copilot document summary, you can:
- choose from three levels of summary detail: brief, standard, or detailed.
- summarize up to 3,000 pages in a document, an upgrade from the previous cap of 300 pages (learn more).
- view key numbers or answers to questions you may have about the document’s contents.
- see recent comments, changes, and updates since you last opened the document or over the last 3 days, week, or two weeks.
- view a summary of comments or discussions happening within the document.
- access coaching suggestions to enhance the clarity or impact of the content.
How it works
- Open an existing document in Word for Windows or for Mac, or in Word for the web.
- Click View more or expand with the chevron to open the Copilot summary preview at the top of your document, and notice five new tabs are visible: Summary, Insights, Activity, Discussion, and Coaching.
- To view a summary of the document’s contents, select the Summary tab.
- Click the down arrow to the right of Standard and below the summary to toggle between summary lengths and select the one you want.
- To view key numbers or takeaways, select the Insights tab.
- To view recent activity, select the Activity tab, then open the dropdown menu underneath the Activity summary to toggle between time windows (3 days, 1 week, or 2 weeks).
- To see an overview of the document’s comments, select the Discussion tab.
- To get advice and suggestions for improving your content, select the Coaching tab.
Tips and tricks
- When selecting a Summary length, Brief will provide a short paragraph, Standard will summarize key points, and Detailed will provide a long-form summary. To summarize the entirety of documents that are longer than 300 pages, select Detailed.
- If you want to understand where certain information is coming from, you can click on a citation, which will bring you to the information’s place in the document.
- To ask Copilot follow-up questions on any of the information in your document summary, select the chat button at the bottom of the summary.
