Editor's note October 27, 2026: We've updated this blog post to include additional IT guidance for Microsoft products.

On September 17, 2026, the Manitoba government made an official announcement about a Daylight-Saving Time (DST) time zone change. Starting at 02:00 a.m. November 1, 2026, the official time will not fall back by an hour and will permanently remain on the UTC-5 time zone.

The impact of this change is as follows:

  1. Clocks will not be set back by an hour at 02:00 a.m. on November 01, 2026, for the Manitoba time zone.
  2. The Manitoba Region time zone will permanently remain on the UTC-5 time zone.

Microsoft is releasing the October 2026 Windows update in support of this decision. All supported Windows versions will receive the Manitoba DST update as part of the October monthly security update scheduled for release on October 13, 2026.

Visit Interim guidance for Manitoba permanent DST 2026 for an earlier announcement of this change.

“[Date and Time] This update introduces the new (UTC-05:00) Manitoba time zone to support Manitoba’s November 1, 2026, time zone change.”

Workarounds

Important: Some Microsoft 365 apps and services, such as Outlook and Exchange Online calendars, require admin and user action. Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows devices need an Edge/WebView2 update. Other Microsoft 365 workloads are being validated. For guidance and latest updates, refer to Canada 2026 time zone changes: Guidance for Microsoft products.

In cases where the monthly update cannot be received or installed before 1st of November, affected organizations with devices in Manitoba are advised to use the following workaround. After November 1st, 2026, we suggest using the below fixed-offset alternatives only as temporary workarounds:

Affected area

Existing choice before the transition

Temporary choice after the transition

Manitoba

(UTC-06:00) Central Time (US & Canada) (Central Standard Time)

(UTC-05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) (Eastern Standard Time) ¹

¹ After switching to Eastern Time, disable "automatic DST adjustments" option to lock the offset at UTC-05:00.

  • Go to Settings > Time & language > Date & time. → Select toggle "Adjust for daylight saving time automatically" to Off.
  • Re-enable this setting once the October 2026 Windows security update with Manitoba Standard Time is installed.

Note: Because Manitoba is on Central Daylight Time (CDT = UTC-05:00) through November 1st, users may apply the Eastern Time and disable DST workaround at any point before the transition. The offset will be correct both before and after the fact.

These alternatives provide the required UTC offset but have different names, geographic mappings, and historical rules. They should not be treated as permanent replacements.

Visit Interim guidance for Manitoba permanent DST 2026 for an earlier announcement of this change.

Ordinarily I'd try to leave a more verbose and detailed comment but this is all I can manage this week:
I've tried to use the new "Manitoba Standard Time" timezone and have found issues with it. At this point in time I'm leaning towards not using it for now and going with "SA Pacific Standard Time" (Lima/Bogota/etc) instead.

    • If MBT is set and MS Teams is restarted, Teams doesn't seem to recognize the timezone and shows message timestamps one hour behind than they should be.
    • If MBT is set and OneNote opened, the quick-part (or whatever it's called) for adding Meeting invite details shows calendar entries one hour behind than they should be.
    • The new TZ doesn't appear yet in MS365 services (myaccount.microsoft.com for example). Might be "too early" for that, but doesn't inspire confidence with two weeks to go.
    • If MBT is set, Gmail shows timestamps on messages one hour earlier than it should (calendar seems fine, weirdly enough). "SA Pacific Standard Time" is not impacted by this.

    Not loving my options.
