Reliable, in-depth, and at-scale monitoring of database performance has been a long-standing top priority for SQL customers. Today, we are pleased to announce the public preview of database watcher for Azure SQL, a managed database monitoring solution to help our customers use Azure SQL reliably and efficiently.
Managed monitoring for Azure SQL
To enable database watcher, you do not need to deploy any monitoring infrastructure or install and maintain any monitoring agents. You can create a new watcher and start monitoring your Azure SQL estate in minutes.
Once enabled, database watcher collects detailed monitoring data from your databases, elastic pools, and managed instances into a central data store in your Azure subscription. Data is collected with minimal latency – when you open a monitoring dashboard, you see database state as of just a few seconds ago.

Dashboards in the Azure portal show you a single-pane-of-glass view across your Azure SQL estate, and a detailed view of each database, elastic pool, and managed instance.

Database watcher is powered by Azure Data Explorer, a fully managed, highly scalable data service, purpose-built for fast ingestion and analytics on time-series monitoring data. A single Azure Data Explorer cluster can scale to support monitoring data from thousands of Azure SQL resources. You have an option to use the same core engine in Real-Time Analytics in Microsoft Fabric, an all-in-one SaaS analytics solution for enterprises. Real-Time Analytics seamlessly integrates with other experiences and items in Microsoft Fabric.
Once the SQL monitoring data is in Azure Data Explorer or Real-Time Analytics, it becomes available not just on dashboards in the Azure portal, but also for a wide variety of other uses: you can analyze data on-demand using KQL or T-SQL, build custom visualizations in Power BI and Grafana or use native Azure Data Explorer dashboards, analyze monitoring data in Excel, or export it for integration with downstream systems.
A retrospective of database monitoring in Azure SQL
Over the last decade, our customers have consistently told us that reliable, low-latency, and detailed monitoring is a must-have for a cloud database service. In the early days of Azure SQL, Azure Monitor metrics and diagnostic telemetry met database monitoring requirements for many of our customers. But when large and complex mission-critical database applications became common in Azure, it was clear that we needed to do more.
In the following years, we released two monitoring solutions that were intended to bring advanced monitoring capabilities to Azure SQL: Azure SQL Analytics and SQL Insights. However, customer feedback for Azure SQL Analytics highlighted gaps in the monitoring data coverage, an excessively high data latency, and high cost at scale. SQL Insights improved data coverage to a degree, but the data latency and cost concerns remained. An even stronger customer feedback for SQL Insights was that customers didn’t want to set up and maintain an IaaS VM to monitor PaaS database services. Reliability problems in Azure SQL Analytics and SQL Insights have affected customers as well. Today, these earlier solutions remain in preview.
We learned from this experience and feedback when designing and building database watcher. This new managed database monitoring solution brings truly in-depth data coverage, collecting data from over 70 SQL system views and visualizing it directly in the Azure portal. Data latency is typically in single-digit seconds or less, not minutes. Azure Data Explorer and Real-Time Analytics bring their advanced analytics capabilities, enabling us, our customers, and partners to develop actionable advice and insights from the rich data that database watcher collects.
Roadmap
The preview we are launching today makes a managed monitoring solution for Azure SQL broadly available to our customers. But our journey is not yet complete. As we make progress toward general availability and beyond, customers can expect the following new features and improvements:

An increased limit on the number of monitoring targets per watcher
Configuration and management with PowerShell and Azure CLI
Support for user-assigned managed identity

This is not a static list. Our work on database watcher is largely driven by your feedback. We encourage you to tell us what is most important for you in the SQL monitoring space, both in the short and in the long term.

During the private preview, dozens of Azure SQL customers have evaluated database watcher for their monitoring scenarios and provided detailed feedback to help us deliver a functional and reliable database monitoring solution. We are very grateful to every private preview participant – you all have made database watcher better!

I am trying to find deadlocked queries in my server. Is there a way to find that?
I do see that this table sqldb_database_performance_counters_common contains a field counter_name with one of the possible values = "Number of Deadlocks/sec". But how do I find out which queries are deadlocked?
The watcher dashboards do not give this information.
itsmeupa the closest you can get to this is filter for aborted queries on the top queries dashboard using the "Execution types" dropdown, focusing on the same time interval where you see non-zero "Number of Deadlocks/sec". To be clear, a query can be aborted for reasons other than a deadlock, so this is not precise.
Database watcher doesn't collect detailed deadlock information today because it is only available via extended events, not via DMVs. That is on our roadmap.
I was under impression that a free cluster will save up to 100 gb of data. Once the limit is reached, it will notify me to upgrade and will stop storing further. Existing data will remain.
I chose a free cluster and have 3 SQL targets. I see my data is 332 GB and some cost incurred.
Hi itsmeupa - the 100 GB limit is approximate and depends on the compression ratio. With higher compression, the limit is higher. The actual limit is on the compressed data. We recently clarified this in the free cluster documentation.
Regardless of the amount of data, there is no cost for the free cluster.
Question: with Database Watcher can I - investigate my database park and see the most used queries? - run a custom query all over my database park? (ex: identify unused index)
Francesco_beqom - Yes, you can see the top queries across your monitored database estate in the Top queries tab of the estate dashboard. You can also access the data using the Query runtime statistics and Query wait statisticsdatasets.
Database watcher cannot execute a custom query across all monitored databases, but specifically for unused indexes (and other index metadata and statistics) you can query the Index metadata dataset. This data is also visualized on the Indexes tab on the detailed dashboard.
Are you able to give a rough indication on when this might come out of preview? This is preventing us from investing more. Although we are loving what it gives us so far 😀
markgebbet - we are tentatively planning making database watcher generally available in the spring of 2025. But this depends on preview feedback and on the quality signals, so the timeline is subject to change. Database watcher is fully supported by Microsoft Support while in public preview.
For ADX Free cluster, if I create the cluster and navigate to the web UI (https://dataexplorer.azure.com/clusters/...........), I am able to see the cluster > database etc. But my team mate, who is an owner as well, CAN NOT. A permission related error comes. The same happens when he creates it and I get the error. Is this a known bug?
Worse, we are not able to see the cluster under Home > Azure Data Clusters and there is no way to modify access at the cluster level, as the free cluster does not fall under any subscription. So, as a team there is no way to actually use this. Or what am I missing here?
Hi itsmeupa - if you run out of storage capacity on the free ADX cluster, new data won't be collected, but existing data will remain accessible via dashboards. By default, dashboards use the last one hour as the time interval, so after one hour, dashboards will be empty when you open them. You can change the time interval to a time in the past to see the older data.
The free cluster does provide a warning that you are close to running out of space on its management page. At that point you can upgrade to a paid cluster or delete older data by setting a retention policy.
After your watcher has been collecting data for some time, you can check the average amount of data ingested per day for your SQL estate and workload and estimate the retention period that lets you stay under the 100 GB limit. Here's a KQL query to see the original and compressed size of data by table. The 100 GB limit applies to uncompressed data.

Hi Dimitri_Furman , I have set up database watcher successfully. My question is if I use Azure Data Explorer FREE which only allows 100gb of data, what happens when that limit is reached? Do the dbWatcher dashboards stop showing insights on current data? Do we get some kind of prior warning?
Hi itsmeupa You always have the option to upgrade a free cluster to paid cluster and everything will continue to work. The upgrade operation itself takes a few minutes of the cluster being in a read-only mode and it later catches up on the ingestion of the data.

Managed monitoring for Azure SQL

To enable database watcher, you do not need to deploy any monitoring infrastructure or install and maintain any monitoring agents. You can create a new watcher and start monitoring your Azure SQL estate in minutes.

Once enabled, database watcher collects detailed monitoring data from your databases, elastic pools, and managed instances into a central data store in your Azure subscription. Data is collected with minimal latency – when you open a monitoring dashboard, you see database state as of just a few seconds ago.

Database watcher is powered by Azure Data Explorer, a fully managed, highly scalable data service, purpose-built for fast ingestion and analytics on time-series monitoring data. A single Azure Data Explorer cluster can scale to support monitoring data from thousands of Azure SQL resources. You have an option to use the same core engine in Real-Time Analytics in Microsoft Fabric, an all-in-one SaaS analytics solution for enterprises. Real-Time Analytics seamlessly integrates with other experiences and items in Microsoft Fabric.

Once the SQL monitoring data is in Azure Data Explorer or Real-Time Analytics, it becomes available not just on dashboards in the Azure portal, but also for a wide variety of other uses: you can analyze data on-demand using KQL or T-SQL, build custom visualizations in Power BI and Grafana or use native Azure Data Explorer dashboards, analyze monitoring data in Excel, or export it for integration with downstream systems.
A retrospective of database monitoring in Azure SQL

Over the last decade, our customers have consistently told us that reliable, low-latency, and detailed monitoring is a must-have for a cloud database service. In the early days of Azure SQL, Azure Monitor metrics and diagnostic telemetry met database monitoring requirements for many of our customers. But when large and complex mission-critical database applications became common in Azure, it was clear that we needed to do more.

In the following years, we released two monitoring solutions that were intended to bring advanced monitoring capabilities to Azure SQL: Azure SQL Analytics and SQL Insights. Reliable, in-depth, and at-scale monitoring of database performance has been a long-standing top priority for SQL customers. Today, we are pleased to announce the public preview of database watcher for Azure SQL, a managed database monitoring solution to help our customers use Azure SQL reliably and efficiently.

Managed monitoring for Azure SQL

To enable database watcher, you do not need to deploy any monitoring infrastructure or install and maintain any monitoring agents. You can create a new watcher and start monitoring your Azure SQL estate in minutes.
\n

Once enabled, database watcher collects detailed monitoring data from your databases, elastic pools, and managed instances into a central data store in your Azure subscription. Data is collected with minimal latency – when you open a monitoring dashboard, you see database state as of just a few seconds ago.

Database watcher is powered by Azure Data Explorer, a fully managed, highly scalable data service, purpose-built for fast ingestion and analytics on time-series monitoring data. A single Azure Data Explorer cluster can scale to support monitoring data from thousands of Azure SQL resources. You have an option to use the same core engine in Real-Time Analytics in Microsoft Fabric, an all-in-one SaaS analytics solution for enterprises. Real-Time Analytics seamlessly integrates with other experiences and items in Microsoft Fabric.

Once the SQL monitoring data is in Azure Data Explorer or Real-Time Analytics, it becomes available not just on dashboards in the Azure portal, but also for a wide variety of other uses: you can analyze data on-demand using KQL or T-SQL, build custom visualizations in Power BI and Grafana or use native Azure Data Explorer dashboards, analyze monitoring data in Excel, or export it for integration with downstream systems.
A retrospective of database monitoring in Azure SQL

Over the last decade, our customers have consistently told us that reliable, low-latency, and detailed monitoring is a must-have for a cloud database service. In the early days of Azure SQL, Azure Monitor metrics and diagnostic telemetry met database monitoring requirements for many of our customers. But when large and complex mission-critical database applications became common in Azure, it was clear that we needed to do more.

I am trying to find deadlocked queries in my server. Is there a way to find that?
I do see that this table sqldb_database_performance_counters_common contains a field counter_name with one of the possible values = \"Number of Deadlocks/sec\". But how do I find out which queries are deadlocked?
The watcher dashboards do not give this information.

To be clear, a query can be aborted for reasons other than a deadlock, so this is not precise.

I was under impression that a free cluster will save up to 100 gb of data. Once the limit is reached, it will notify me to upgrade and will stop storing further. Existing data will remain.
I chose a free cluster and have 3 SQL targets. I see my data is 332 GB and some cost incurred.
The cost is indeed for the cluster right?

Hi itsmeupa - the 100 GB limit is approximate and depends on the compression ratio. With higher compression, the limit is higher. The actual limit is on the compressed data. We recently clarified this in the free cluster documentation.

For ADX Free cluster, if I create the cluster and navigate to the web UI (https://dataexplorer.azure.com/clusters/...........), I am able to see the cluster > database etc. But my team mate, who is an owner as well, CAN NOT. A permission related error comes. The same happens when he creates it and I get the error. Is this a known bug?
Worse, we are not able to see the cluster under Home > Azure Data Clusters and there is no way to modify access at the cluster level, as the free cluster does not fall under any subscription. So, as a team there is no way to actually use this. Or what am I missing here?

Hi itsmeupa - if you run out of storage capacity on the free ADX cluster, new data won't be collected, but existing data will remain accessible via dashboards. By default, dashboards use the last one hour as the time interval, so after one hour, dashboards will be empty when you open them. You can change the time interval to a time in the past to see the older data.

The free cluster does provide a warning that you are close to running out of space on its management page. At that point you can upgrade to a paid cluster or delete older data by setting a retention policy.

After your watcher has been collecting data for some time, you can check the average amount of data ingested per day for your SQL estate and workload and estimate the retention period that lets you stay under the 100 GB limit. Here's a KQL query to see the original and compressed size of data by table. The 100 GB limit applies to uncompressed data.

Hi Dimitri_Furman , I have set up database watcher successfully. My question is if I use Azure Data Explorer FREE which only allows 100gb of data, what happens when that limit is reached? Do the dbWatcher dashboards stop showing insights on current data? Do we get some kind of prior warning?

Hi itsmeupa You always have the option to upgrade a free cluster to paid cluster and everything will continue to work. The upgrade operation itself takes a few minutes of the cluster being in a read-only mode and it later catches up on the ingestion of the data.
