This retirement is very disappointing news. I really like the speed and simplicity of ADS compared to SSMS. I installed the mssql extension in VS Code to try it out, but I am finding it hard to keep a good workflow with everything in VS Code.
I jump between several servers and many databases each day and I really appreciated that ADS preserved all my tabs between launches, even unsaved ones. How can I mimic that in VS Code? VS Code opens the last thing you were working on. So, now I have to set up a "sql" folder so that I have a workspace/project for SQL and open it explicitly in a separate VS Code window to keep all my tabs. From a cognitive load perspective, it was better to have all my SQL stuff in one ADS window, not have to worry about workspaces, and code projects over in VS Code.
