In this issue: Ace Aviator of the Month News from our product group News from our community Ace Aviator of the Month Novembers’s Ace Aviator: Al Ghoniem What's your role and title? What are your responsibilities? As a Senior Integration Consultant, I design and deliver enterprise-grade integration on Microsoft Azure, primarily using Logic Apps Standard, API Management, Service Bus, Event Grid and Azure Functions. My remit covers reference architectures, “golden” templates, governance and FinOps guardrails, CI/CD automation (Bicep and YAML), and production-ready patterns for reliability, observability and cost efficiency. Alongside my technical work, I lead teams of consultants and engineers, helping them adopt standardised delivery models, mentor through code reviews and architectural walkthroughs, and ensure we deliver consistent, high-quality outcomes across projects. I also help teams apply decisioning patterns (embedded versus external rules) and integrate AI responsibly within enterprise workflows. Can you give us some insights into your day-to-day activities and what a typical day in your role looks like? Architecture and patterns: refining solution designs, sequence diagrams and rules models for new and existing integrations. Build and automation: evolving reusable Logic App Standard templates, Bicep modules and pipelines, embedding monitoring, alerts and identity-first security. Problem-solving: addressing performance tuning, transient fault handling, poison/DLQ flows and “design for reprocessing.” Leadership and enablement: mentoring consultants, facilitating technical discussions, and ensuring knowledge is shared across teams. Community and writing: publishing articles and examples to demystify real-world integration trade-offs. What motivates and inspires you to be an active member of the Aviators/Microsoft community? The community continuously turns hard-won lessons into reusable practices. Sharing patterns (and anti-patterns) saves others time and incidents, while learning from peers strengthens my own work. Microsoft’s product teams also listen closely, and seeing customer feedback directly shape the platform is genuinely rewarding. Looking back, what advice do you wish you had been given earlier that you'd now share with those looking to get into STEM/technology? Optimise for learning speed, not titles. Choose problems that stretch you and deliver in small, measurable increments. Master the fundamentals. Naming, idempotency, retries and observability are not glamorous but make systems dependable. Document everything. Diagrams, runbooks and ADRs multiply your impact. Understand trade-offs. Every decision buys something and costs something; acknowledge both sides clearly. Value collaboration over heroics. Ask questions, share knowledge and give credit freely. What has helped you grow professionally? Reusable scaffolding: creating golden templates and reference repositories that capture best practice once and reuse it everywhere. Feedback loops: leveraging telemetry, post-incident reviews and peer critique to improve. Teaching and mentoring: explaining concepts to others brings clarity and strengthens leadership. Cross-disciplinary curiosity: combining architecture, DevOps, FinOps and AI to address problems holistically. If you had a magic wand that could create a feature in Logic Apps, what would it be and why? "Stateful Sessions and Decisions” as a first-class capability: Built-in session state across multiple workflows, durable correlation and resumable orchestrations without external storage. A native decisioning activity with versioned decision tables and rule auditing (“why this rule fired”). A local-first developer experience with fast testing and contract validation for confident iteration. This would simplify complex, human-in-the-loop and event-driven scenarios, reduce custom plumbing, and make advanced orchestration patterns accessible to a wider audience. SAP recently introduced the Microsoft Teams adapter as part of its SAP Integration Suite offering. This solution enables seamless integration between Microsoft Teams and SAP Integration Suite, improving communication and automating workflows. Organizations can efficiently connect data from various sources to the Microsoft Teams platform, streamlining operations and significantly reducing the effort required to design and implement integration workflows. Key Benefits of using the Microsoft Teams Adapter The Microsoft Teams Adapter provides the following key features: Supports standard operations on various Microsoft Teams resources like Channel, Team, Member, Message, and Chat. Supports authentication methods like OAuth2 Authorization Code and OAuth2 Client Credentials. Supports querying on resources to retrieve the desired output as per your requirements. Supports pagination using the Get Next Results Page operation. You can perform operations at the user level (Delegated Permission) and organization/admin level (Application Permission). How to use the Microsoft Teams Adapter? The Microsoft Teams adapter is available as part of your SAP Integration Suite license. To use the adapter, you must first add it to your Integration Flow, add the required Connection parameters, and configure it as per your Processing requirements. Once you have configured the Microsoft Teams adapter, the SAP CI tenant enables data exchange at runtime by sending a request to the Microsoft Teams receiver system. Finally, after processing this request, Microsoft Teams sends back the required data to SAP. The Microsoft Teams adapter can help you exchange the data between Microsoft Teams and other systems. Let us look at a simple operation: adding members to a team in bulk in Microsoft Teams using the Microsoft Teams Adapter for SAP Integration Suite. Adding members in bulk to a team Our example illustrates how the Microsoft Teams Adapter allows you to add the team member in bulk. The integration flow begins with a client initiating a request to an endpoint to send the member information to Microsoft Teams. Request Payload Setup using Content Modifier We use a Content Modifier to include the request payload that provides the information about the users to be added as members to the team. The request body shown above demonstrates how two users can be added to the team. Users can be specified in the body by either their User IDs or their principal names. A combination of both methods is used in the body above. This approach allows for adding up to 200 members to a team, all of which can be specified in the request body. How to Connect to Microsoft Teams? The connection tab contains the following fields: Parameter Description Address Specify the address for the Microsoft Teams service. Default: https://graph.microsoft.com/ Authentication Select the authentication method and permission type: 'Delegated' for user-level access, 'Application' for app-level access. OAuth2 Client Credentials(Application Permissions) OAuth2 Authorization Code(Delegated Permissions) Credential Name Specify the security artifact for the selected authentication type to connect to the Microsoft Teams account. Reuse Connection Enable this property to reuse the connection. Connection Timeout (in ms) Specify the maximum waiting time (in milliseconds) for the connection to be established. Response Timeout (in ms) Specify the maximum waiting time (in milliseconds) for a response message to be received. Execute Operation using the Microsoft Teams Adapter We begin by configuring the adapter within the processing tab, selecting Member as the resource and choosing the Add Team Members in Bulk operation. This operation allows us to add up to 200 members to a team in a single request, with all the details of the members to be added specified in the request body. After configuring the adapter, we provide the Team ID of the team where the members will be added. If any additions fail, the response provides detailed information, specifying which memberships were successfully added and which ones encountered issues. It is important to note that the addition of members may take some time to reflect within the team. To track any membership changes, we can subscribe to https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/graph/api/resources/change-notifications-api-overview?view=graph-rest-1.0, which will alert us to updates regarding membership changes in the specific team. Quick Links For detailed information about Microsoft Teams adapter configuration, see https://help.sap.com/docs/integration-suite/sap-integration-suite/microsoft-teams-receiver-adapter and https://api.sap.com/odata/1.0/catalog.svc/Files('684a79b439a0408a816aeaffb339f0e6')/$value. SAP Testing Automation Framework (STAF) While deployment automation frameworks like SAP Deployment Automation Framework (SDAF) have streamlined system implementation, the critical testing phase has largely remained a manual bottleneck – until now. We are introducing the SAP Testing Automation Framework (STAF), a new framework (currently in public preview) that automates high-availability (HA) testing for SAP deployments on Azure. STAF currently focuses on testing HA configurations for SAP HANA and SAP Central Services. Importantly, STAF is a cross-distribution solution supporting both SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) and RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), reflecting our commitment to serve the diverse SAP on Azure customer base.. STAF uses modular architecture with Ansible for orchestration and custom modules for validation. It ensures business continuity by validating configurations and recovery mechanisms before systems go live, reducing risks, boosting efficiency, and ensuring compliance with standards. You can start leveraging its capabilities today by visiting the project on GitHub at https://github.com/azure/sap-automation-qa. In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, ensuring that enterprise systems perform flawlessly is non-negotiable. As businesses increasingly rely on SAP systems to run their critical operations, testing becomes an essential pillar of operational excellence. Traditionally, SAP system testing has been manual, time-consuming, and prone to gaps. Addressing these critical aspects, Microsoft has introduced the SAP Testing Automation Framework (STAF), an open-source orchestration tool developed to validate SAP deployments on Microsoft Azure. It enables you to assess system configurations against SAP on Azure best practices and to automate various testing scenarios, with an initial focus on high availability (HA) testing. What is the SAP Testing Automation Framework? The SAP Testing Automation Framework is an open-source orchestration tool engineered to validate SAP deployments on the Microsoft Azure platform. Its core purpose is to help customers ensure their SAP systems run smoothly by proactively identifying potential issues. It achieves this by simulating system failures, verifying that configurations adhere to best practices, and automating the entire testing process to save time and improve accuracy. The framework is built on a modular, configuration‑as‑code model using standard tools. The tests are defined in version‑controlled Ansible playbooks, and custom Python modules handle in‑depth checks of both your SAP systems and Azure resources. Key Features: Configuration Validation: It checks whether the configurations of SAP HANA scale-up or SAP Central Services align with established SAP on Azure best practices and guidelines. High Availability Functional Testing: It simulates multiple test cases to ensure that the failover mechanisms are effective. With SAP HANA databases and SAP Central Services as prime examples, this testing validates that when a component fails, the system can gracefully recover without disruption. This helps identify potential issues during new system deployments. Detailed Reporting: The framework collects detailed telemetry from SAP components and test execution where it captures event sequences, detection timings, failover durations, and system responses. It compiles this data into a comprehensive HTML report with clear pass/fail outcomes and timestamps. Optionally, you can stream logs to Azure Log Analytics or Data Explorer. Extensible and Pipeline-ready: All framework operations, Ansible playbooks, and custom python modules are defined as code, making them ideal for integration with CI/CD pipelines. You can invoke STAF immediately after your deployment and installation step via SAP Deployment Automation Framework, running comprehensive HA tests before promoting changes. SAP System High Availability Functional Testing The initial and most prominent capability of the SAP Testing Automation Framework is its comprehensive High Availability (HA) functional testing for critical SAP components hosted on Microsoft Azure. The framework targets scenarios involving SAP HANA scale-up database and SAP Central Services (ASCS/SCS) deployed in a two-node cluster on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), providing a cross-distribution solution for our diverse SAP on Azure customer base. For supported configuration, see support matrix. The SAP Testing Automation Framework employs a systematic approach to validate the robustness of SAP system HA setup. It verifies the configuration and captures the entire sequence of events in an HA scenario: from initial failure detection, through isolation of the faulty component (including fencing), to resource migration, service recovery on the standby node, and implicitly, the consistency of data upon successful recovery. Upon completion of the tests run, STAF compiles results into a clear, HTML‑based report that details configuration compliance checks and functional test outcomes, complete with timestamps and pass/fail statuses. The report also includes logs from /var/log/messages to provide context. This comprehensive validation of the HA process flow is fundamental to building confidence in the resilience of the SAP system on Azure. Getting Started with the SAP Testing Automation Framework The SAP Testing Automation Framework is available as an open-source project on GitHub for the community to use and contribute. You can find the code and documentation in the official repository: Azure/sap-automation-qa: This is the repository supporting the quality assurance for SAP systems running on Azure.. The project is currently in a public preview stage. So, feedback and contributions are welcome to help improve its capabilities. To start using the framework, you have a couple of options depending on your environment: SAP system manually deployed (not using SDAF): If you want to validate manually configured high availability of SAP system, you can run the framework in a standalone mode. This involves deploying the management server (for example, an Ubuntu VM that will orchestrate the tests), configuring it with details of your SAP landscape (cluster nodes, IPs, etc.), and then executing the provided playbooks or scripts to run the HA tests. The repository provides guidance on how to configure the necessary variables and run the test scenarios for a Pacemaker cluster environment. Integration with Deployment Pipelines: For those who already use automated deployment tools like the SAP Deployment Automation Framework (SDAF) for Azure, the testing framework can integrate directly into those pipelines. The framework is designed as a natural extension to SDAF, so it can leverage the same configuration context and Azure resources defined during deployment. This allows you to embed HA testing into your continuous delivery process, every time you deploy or update an SAP environment, the pipeline can automatically run the HA tests and surface any issues before you even hand the system over to end-users or application teams. Call to Action & Community Engagement The SAP Testing Automation Framework, in public preview stage, is a significant step forward in reducing misconfigurations and manual effort in high availability deployment of SAP system on Azure. We encourage you to explore the framework, share your feedback, or contribute. During this public preview, we recommend using framework for new greenfield production high availability deployments that are not yet live, or on non-production environments.
