Windows Server 2025 Standard - failing to load sign in screen
Hello all Has anyone come across an issue with login into their Win Svr 2025 Standard via the GUI or RDP? Had a good google and can't see much of info out there but since last week I lost the ability to RDP or even locally sign into my server running Hyper-V, VMs work fine. When connecting via RDP the session is initiated - get past credential prompt and cert warning but never gets to establish the session. Since the server is hosted on prem, I was able to pop down to the comms room but when I tried to login via GUI after hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del loading screen comes up but never follows through to display username and password textboxes. Since this is a production system I can't just reboot the whole lot. In the meantime, I've tried restarting both WinLogon.exe and LogonUI.exe processes via CIMSession both were showing twice and after terminating each the number of processes come down to 1 but still no joy signing in. Any ideas community? New to the community so apologies in advance if I posted in the wrong place. Best wishes Michal
Assign IP Address for Windows Server 2025 VM on Hyper-V
I have built my first Windows Server 2025 VM on HyperV and trying to assign an IP address. I want the VM's to be like an actual server so I Created an external vswitch. The HyperV server IP is 172.16.1.41 with a physical gateway of 172.16.1.5. I have tried to assign the new VM with 172.16.1.42/255.255.255.0 and the Gateway is 172.16.1.5 also. However, I cannot get a positive ping. Do I need another VSWITCH configured or what am I missing?
Hyper-v Ubuntu 26.04LTS Multiple DHCP entries
Good evening, am running windows server 2022 datacenter edition, which is running multiple hyper-v machines. I have been installing a new instance of ubuntu 26.04.1LTS but have noticed something weird. Maybe you could assist. Issue: When fresh install Ubuntu 26.04.1 into a VM using hyper-v, I notice 2 IP addresses appear in windows DHCP (192.168.40.20, 192.168.40.21). When I shut down the instance only one disappears (192.168.40.21). If I delete 192.168.40.20 and restart the VM instance both Ip addresses reappear in DHCP. Points to note: Image was downloaded direct off the website with no changes (have redownloaded to make sure image is not broken) Have tried using a different name for the server Have noticed the ubuntu instance only picks up one address (192.168.40.21) for the adaptor. Am unable to ping 192.168.40.20 or connect to that address via ssh. Would anyone have any idea, where the second IP address would be coming from in DHCP?
Encrypted vhdx moved to new host, boots without pin or recovery key
Hyper-V environment. Enabled VTPM on guest Server, 2022 OS and encrypted OS drive C:\ with BitLocker. Host server 2022 has physical TPM. Shut down guest OS and copied vhdx file to another Hyper-V host server that is completely off network (also server 2022 with a physical TPM). Created a new VM based on the "encrypted" vhdx. I was able to start the VM without needing a PIN or a recovery key. Doesn't this defeat the whole point of encrypting vhd's? Searching says that this should not be possible, but I replicated it twice on two different off network Hyper-V host servers. Another odd thing is that when the guest boots on the new host and you log in, the drive is NOT encrypted. So, where's the security in that? Does anyone have any ideas on this or if I'm missing something completely? Or have I just made Microsoft angry for pointing out this glaring flaw??
Windows Backup taking waaaaay to long
While I'm not a heavy user of these MS forums I have had to resort to them from time to time over the last 15-20 years. Yet I still can't figure out the organizational structure and it seems I can never find the right forum for my query. Almost every time my post gets moved to the correct forum or message board, or someone gives me a link directly to it. I expect it to be no different this time, and I'm perfectly fine with that. So here we go. I have Windows Server 2025 installed as a VM using MS's built-in Hyper-V on a Server 2025 computer. the VM is set up as a DC and all that stuff functions exactly as it should. However, doing the backup has suddenly gone from taking anywhere from 2 hours to a max that comes close to but has never exceeded four hours. Obviously, it depends on how much there is to actually back up. I've already gone through the troubleshooting tips to do things like checking the VSS settings and a bit of other stuff I can't exactly recall at the moment. I have an external physical 1TB usb hard drive attached to the physical computer and then it's attached as a drive to the Server 2025 VM and shows up in computer management/disk manager ad Disk 1, as it should. I have the VM set up to use this Disk 1 as the backup disk with the Windows Server Backup program. Some things I note and add here in case it matters. - The size of the VM disk for this Server 2025 VM is 500GB and the partition size of Drive C shows as 498.91GB with the remaining shown as 100MB for the EFI system partion and 1001MB for the recovery partition. - When backup starts, a new disk labeled Disk 2 appears in the disk management window on the VM and I note it's the same size as Drive C on the VM at 498.91GB. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with why my backups suddenly went from taking a max of 4 hours to as long as 20 hours to complete. Where is this virtual disk created? I looked on the VM host machine in the C:\programdata\microsoft\windows\Virtual Hard Disks directory, and it's not there. It's not on the VM machine because the virtual hard disk directory doesn't exist in that same location on the VM. THe host machine itself has a 2TB hard drive in it with 993GB of free space. Any advice or suggestions here? I have no idea why backups went from 2-4 hours to taking 20 hours or more to complete. Thanks for any help, advice or suggestions anyone can offer here. -Carl
Hyper V Duplicates recovery points
Hi, We have a HyperV host in a Windows Server 2016 STD with 3 VM Servers Domain Controller (Windows Server 2019) APP Server (Windows Server 2019) DB Server (Sequel) (Windows Server 2016) The host have 4 TB GB HHD 128 GB RAM 2 Processors 2.20GHz We used Veeam backup tool for backups. Suddenly with every backup run, HyperV creates a Veeam recovery Checkpoint. The free disk space of the disk is shrinking considerably. We also noticed that when every Veeam recovery point is created it creates a duplicate of the AVHDX, MRT and RCT files in the Virtual Hard Disks folder. I disabled the Veeam backup jobs until it can be fixed, because if we get out of disk space the VM Servers will not startup. NOTE: This are the production Servers and no other environment for test exists. Hope you can help me thorough this issue.Hyper-V Cluster Failover Event viewer log showing SMB traffic connect to quorum disk network share
Hi, To tweak my SIEM, I need to correlate smb network traffic between Hyper-V servers and witness disk stored on a network share on another server. I'm searching a log who tell me the Hyper-V is connecting to the witness disk (on network shared drive) for doing something ... probably I will be able to correlate and put exception when this happens and the SMB traffic between Hyper-V and the other server to stop always receive this alert. Any cues would be appreciated! Thanks
Error while running New-VHD cmdlet on Windows Server 2019
Hi, I am trying to create an empty .vhd file using the PowerShell cmdlet New-VHD on Windows Server 2019 virtual machine hosted on Hyper-V. I am seeing the attached error while running the cmdlet: I suspected that it could be related to Hyper-V role on the machine. But, it seems to be all good. Here is the screenshot of what I see on my machine. Strangely I don't see the Hyper-V Services feature on the Windows Server 2019 VM that I am working on. I see Hyper-V Services feature on other VMs on the same Hyper-V for example Windows 10 VM. Any help here will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Yojana
