Installation space problem with LTSC Preview to 22509

Copper Contributor

Hi, trying to update vNext/2022 from 22483 LTSC Preview to 22509. Get message "We can't tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows Server, Try restarting setup." Did that 3 times, no success. Same result with another nearly identical server.

Weird thing happened on both servers before: Update installed "CU for Windows 11 Insider Preview  (10.0.22509.1011) (KB0008918)", on one machine even twice. Why installing Win11 on a 2022 server? Best regards, Marcel

Do you have sufficient space to install the Windows Server?
Try perform a Disk Cleanup.
To Reza Ameri, Thanks. On both machines Server 2019 were installed until ca. 2 months ago. Since then, various 2022 installations took place w/o problems. Machine 1 free space: A:\424 GB, C:\357 GB, D:\424GB, machine 2 free space: A:\62.2GB, C:\359GB, D:\476GB,

Why? See no reason for this.
Thank you for the suggestion. The message is "We can't tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows Server, Try restarting setup." not "There is not enough free space on partition (drive:). A total of space_size megabytes (MB) of free disk space is required. Try Disk Cleanup, or moving files to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive, and then restart the installation." Paging file is 62.5 GB.
And to complete the answer: 5 GB memory is in use of 64 GB (according to system monitor 7%), committed ("virtual") memory is 8/126 GB, cached 5.1 GB, paged/non-paged pool 609/306 MB. IMO more than enough.
In case you have sufficient space you don't need Disk Cleanup.
Have you check the installer log files?
They are located on:
C:\WINDOWS\setupapi.log
C:\WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
C:\WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
C:\WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\PreGatherPnPList.log

Assuming Windows installed on the C: drive.
There are more logs. In C:\windows.~bt\sources\panther\setuperr.log: IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY failed: 0x1 and SP SPGet VhdBootInfo: Failed to query storage property. Error: 080070001
In C:\windows\panther\scanresult.xml: ACTIVA~[n], cannot find volume name for \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\Harddisk[3/4] Partition[3/4]
Disk 3 is C:\drive and 4 its mirror.
In C:\windows\panther\setupact.log and C:\windows\panther\setuperr.log:
IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERTY failed: 0x1.
To repeat: The installation message was: message "We can't tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows Server, Try restarting setup." Probably synonymous with "we don't know" or "we are not able". Previous 3 versions installed flawlessly: 22463, 22483, 22509. Only 22518 did not work. Will wait for a new version. Regards, Marcel
Do you have access to a Windows 10 device?
If yes, then open start and search for feedback in the Windows 10 and open the Feedback Hub app and select the Windows Server and upload your log files and report this issue.
Hello, maybe it is necessary to point out again: Version 22509.1011 is installed and working. To install the latest version, 10.0.22518.1000 (rs_prerelease.221203-1458), is not possible. Problem: MS cannot count space. Did you realize this? Regards, Marcel
For this reason , I asked you to file a report using the Feedback Hub app.
I believe this is a bug and you should report it , so the Windows team would be able to investigate and resolve it.
Right. Sent 6 files from Win10 Feedback Hub, never done that before. Also suspect version 10.0.22518.1000 could be buggy because every previous version worked. Regards, Marcel
Just tried build 22526 on one of the machines where 22509 is installed and got the same message as with build 22518: "We can't tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows Server, Try restarting setup." Tried 22526 on a quite similar box but this time as clean install. That worked. Does it not like to to be a successor to 22509? Regards, Marcel
Tried all current version up to Build 25158 EN, Windows Server LTSC Preview. When trying to install with option "Keep files etc." the same message appears as in late December 2021: “We can’t tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows Server. Try restarting”. This to me is no progress at all.
