Is there a difference between setting up an account as a personal vs business?

Just wanted to make a local account but it kept asking me to sign into a Microsoft account when I tried to set it up as a personal account.

Went under the business or school option, then the option to setup with a domain. It let me create a local account.

Is there any difference between the two?

In Windows 11, Microsoft tries to push users to sign in with a Microsoft account, but you can often find a link to "Sign in with a local account instead" after multiple steps.

  • Different type of accounts with their benefits:

MS Account: Good to sync with Microsoft services/apps across your system. No need to sign to apps individually.

Local Account: Traditional account type, stores your account locally on device. If you forgot it's password, you may need to reset system.

School/work account: Used to connect with work or school resources setup by your IT admin. Governed by their applies policies.

Now you can choose the best account which fulfils your need.

Local accounts only work on this computer, no internet connection, Microsoft accounts work across devices and on Microsoft services, you have to be connected.
