Re: Mobile app Sub folder notifications
I'm disappointed that there's still no actual solution for this, despite the age of this post. As others have said, it's absurd that Outlook for Android can't offer folder level notifications when the stock email applications for Android and IOS both manage to provide them. At this point I'm now debating dropping Outlook for Android. I guess Microsoft has higher priorities, whichever they are, it would be great if they could comment and explain why the problem being outlined in this post is something not worth their concern.11KViews0likes5CommentsNew second row of Quick Links - Two rows may not be enough and other suggestions
First of all, Thanks to the Edge team for adding a second row of quick links to the new tab page. I did not see any news about the feature but after digging around in the settings drop down on the new tab page, I was able to find the way to show the second row. Now that this is there, it feels like we are at least on the right track with customizing the new tab page's speed dial functionality. However, it still is not as rich as what you can get out of Fire Fox or Vivaldi. Don't Limit The Number Of Rows? Take for example my own custom new tab page (this I made for myself using Blazor). It has most of the same look and feel of the edge new tab page, except for one key difference - you can have as many rows of quick links as you want. Obviously, the page will grow as you add more than 4-5 rows, but with the way both Vivaldi and FireFox can accommodate so many, I am used to having all of my bookmarks on my new tab page. Obviously, the trade off with having an unlimited number of rows is that the news content loses its spot. I personally never use the news content, so it is not an issue for me. None the less, if you were to allow a user to have as many quick links as they wanted, then maybe it would be better to put them inside a container that can have scroll bar if it grows beyond a certain number of rows. That way the quick links would not potentially overlap with the news content. Use Favorites for storing QuickLinks The other thing that the new tab page is that it uses some hodge-podge of the top sites and tiles stored with the user data or elsewhere on the users' device. The problem with this is that this storage tends to be erratic with Chromium browsers. Also, if you have more than one computer with Edge on it, you'll quickly find out the quicklinks do not transfer via sync... at least they do not from what I have found. Every time I sign into Edge on a new computer (I tend to do this a lot since I mess with VMs a lot and/or use a fresh profile for ASP.NET development), the Quick Links are reset to default. I think it would make more sense to specify a node in the bookmarks / favorites collection of the user and use those as the source of the quick links. This would allow the user to configure their top sites more easily since they can use pre-existing favorites and since favorites synchronize, the user would not have to reconfigure their quick links on more devices. Vivaldi already does this. Anyways, hopefully this gets taken into consideration. And if anything, else, I just wanted to let you know that your work is appreciated!4.1KViews5likes0CommentsRe: Top Feedback Summary for June 23
I mentioned this around the end of May and left a lengthy, concerned, and disappointed post regarding the lack of movement on this feature and the radio silence. MissyQ took the time to leave a lengthy and very honest response: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/articles/top-feedback-summary-for-may-18/m-p/2405911#M5617 I would suspect that the answer is going to be the same if she pings a dev to see what's going on with it (no info at this time / it's still a TODO). I REALLY want to see this enhancement (as I presume you do as well). Having come from Firefox, it's one of the things I miss (more than one row of top sites).5.5KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
JulesB GToison Agreed, I feel like this problem and the slow pace to get it resolved has made it seem like MSIX is no longer a priority. There also still seems to be a lot of friction regarding transitioning from MSI to MSIX for various devs/studios/publishers/etc, so you are right that the adoption has been anemic. This is really a separate topic though... but in the context of this problem, it isn't encouraging. As far as what I have found out - the ticket I have with Microsoft for this bug in the Partner Center got closed as "resolved". Based on the ticket close notes, there was a code fix applied on 4/13/2021 that "works around" this problem but it only seems to work if the URI's used by the app bundle are different from the previous version. Beyond that, they said that they are working on a full-term solution with the "DO Team" (not sure who that is). At this point I am thinking that we will not see the app installer fix until 21H2. Also I am not sure if the code fix containing the work around is even available in 21H1 since 21H1 seemed to have been finalized months ahead of time due to its disappointing number of new additions versus what is available in the current dev branch / release preview of Windows 10.6.5KViews1like6CommentsRe: Top Feedback Summary for May 18
MissyQ(who never responds 😞 ) Why does the "Allow more top sites on the New Tab Page" keep getting punted? It's beginning to seem like this feature is never going to get implemented and/or it isn't a high priority for the Edge team. A lot of people have been upset about this one since it's something that works out of the box with Chrome, Firefox and now Brave: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/msedge_search-msedge_win10/can-i-add-more-than-8-quick-links-in-edge-2020/1d726b13-ccac-4f4c-92fa-3810d1a49f57 Case in point I have switched to using Brave for most of my browsing because I don't want to use an obnoxious extension that adds too many unnecessary features to the browser. This is becuase currently the only way to customize the new tab page beyond what Edge provides is to use an extension. It's a bit frustrating, because I just want to be able to have more than 6-8 sites to put on my new tab page. I only really use Edge now for work and/or getting MS reward points. It's a shame because I otherwise think the Edge new tab page is the best one with the bing daily images and other customization features. 😞 I doubt you are ever going to respond to this, since I am guessing you either A) Don't know B) Don't care (pardon my bluntness) or C) Never look at these responses. If you do however see this and do happen to have some way to shed some light on this one, it would be appreciated.4.3KViews0likes4CommentsRe: Top Feedback Summary for April 30
"Allow more top sites on the New Tab Page" keeps getting bumped / punted. 😕 I think this has been at least the third time now that it has been rescheduled. I know there are lots of other ways to orgnaize favorites now in Edge (I.E. Collections, bookmarks, extensions, etc) but I still would really like it if this could be made possible soon. 🙁2.9KViews1like0CommentsRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
That sounds like what we had; it was fine for the most part on 1909, but after that it became too unreliable and a poor user experience, so we had no choice but to abandon it (roll backs / re-imaging were out of the question). Out of curiosity, did you try the work around that LuKePicci posted up above? I didn't have a chance to try it myself since we had moved on from MSIX by the time he posted it, but it sounded promising (if you don't need to make the package an app bundle).7.6KViews0likes1CommentRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
GToison I have been told by one of the people on the app consult team that this problem should have been fixed in Windows 10 20H2, but judging from your previous comment, this is not the case. That is a shame. It's also shame that this happened since MS put a lot of effort into promoting MSIX. We really did want to use it but after this problem, we ended up going back to MSI and creating our own app updater and we haven't had any problems. It also sped up our pipelines and all our users now prefer our in-house updater versus the app installer.7.6KViews0likes3CommentsRe: MTC is getting ridiculously slow
Allen I was about to leave feedback about MTC having poor performance but then I found this thread. I am relieved to see your honesty about the situation and acknowledged the problems with Lithium/Khoros limitations. Out of curiosity, do you think we might see the new Khoros features making any debut on this site this year? It would be nice to see some level of improvement to the overall performance (and more consistency with the rest of the MS brand; the TC lacks consistency with the rest of MS' website IMO).1.4KViews0likes3CommentsRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
LuKePicci Can you provide any additional information on how you managed to switch to a non-bundle package? I think we tried that, and we still had the error when trying to perform a subsequent update with the app installer.9.6KViews1like1CommentRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
gug_82 I'm glad to hear it helped. I submitted a bug for this also in Microsoft Collaborate, but it doesn't look like any significant changes have been made yet though. Also, I had a one on one with someone at Microsoft about this and a few other things a couple of weeks back and they said that this problem will only get resolved with an OS update. I had a feeling that was the case. Also, if you have the option of keeping your users from updating to 2004, that is what they encouraged. But if not, restarting is really the only work around right now.9.4KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
That's pretty much what has been happening on my end. Seems to start happening as soon as you install an update with app installer. Like you said, after that it is like something gets cached and/or not properly cleaned up and then the only option is to restart Windows to get it to do whatever it needs to do to clean up the state.23KViews0likes4CommentsRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
Quick update on this one, although I am not sure if it really helps or not - On build 20161 it now shows a different exception in the app installer when it has the issue occur: Common::Deployment::MsixvcStagingSession::GetManifestReader in MsixvcStagingSession failed with error 0x80070570. The AppXDeployment-Server Event Viewer Log also has this exception: Appinstaller operation failed with error code 0x80070570. Detail: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. And the Microsoft-Windows-Store Event Viewer log has theses exceptions: XvcDataSource_GetManifestStream [XBL:]\https://myAzureBlobContainer.z13.web.core.windows.net/MSIX_Test/MyApp_X64.msixbundle Function: XvcUtilities::GetUserDataStreamFromXvc Source: (1008) XvcDataSource_GetManifestStream [XBL:]\https://myAzureBlobContainer.z13.web.core.windows.net/MSIX_Test/MyApp_X64.msixbundle Function: XvcUtilities::RetryOnFailure Source: (69) XvcDataSource_GetManifestStream [XBL:]\https://myAzureBlobContainer.z13.web.core.windows.net/MSIX_Test/MyApp_X64.msixbundle Error: The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable. Hello again Tanaka_Jimha! Thanks for the update, I really appreciate it. And again, please don't interpret my last response as being upset with Sharla, after all she helped get the ball rolling on this. 🙂 I'll let the people on my end know that the issue is being looked into and will let them know we should hold off on making any chances to our CI/CD or deployment until I hear back. Thanks again!23KViews0likes11CommentsRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
Sharla, This is probably going to be my last response to this since I am not sure what else you need and I have not heard any response from you. Anyways, from my findings: - On the users PCs that are running Windows 2004, they do NOT have the Microsoft.GamingServices package installed, which is what I presume is causing the MSIXC Support Service error message. I can see that when I run the app installer using the debugger in VS or NirSoft's debug tool, it shows that app installer is interacting with that service for some reason. - The users PCs that are running Windows 2004, they get the error at some point regardless as to whether or not they are installing using .appinstaller or plain .msix. Sometimes the users get it even right after starting their PC. - On the fast ring PC, which has the Gaming Service installed, it gets a different error on subsequent installs or updates, saying that the XML is invalid for the app installer file, even saying its bad at line 1 column 0, which doesn't make any sense. I haven't been able to get any errors directly installing from an .msix file though on the fast ring PC. - The problem ONLY seems to occur when trying to install the .msix or .appinstaller files using HTTP/HTTPS. UNC / Local file paths seem to work fine. At this point we probably are going to try waiting another week and a half, but if we do not get any more indication or see anything change soon, we probably will have to take the software off the Desktop Bridge. We cannot role all 145+ PCs back to 1903 at this point. I have to admit, I am disappointed that I haven't received any responses since you asked me to submit information through the app center. A simple "we are looking at it" would have sufficed. I am sure you understand my frustration though and please do not take this as an insult; I greatly appreciate everything you do at MS. Needless to say, I am surprised other people haven't stumbled upon this problem yet, which makes me almost wonder if we're the only ones using .msix / .appinstaller in production. 😞 Thanks, and hopefully this will get resolved before we have to make the decision to leave the Desktop Bridge.23KViews0likes13CommentsRe: Windows 10 2004 - MSIX Not Updating -Please check whether the Msixvc support services are installed.
Sharla, Edit #2: Well, the idea I had earlier about HTTP turned out to be incorrect. The app installer errors out on subsequent package updates when using either HTTP or HTTPS endpoints. One thing I noticed is that this cryptic error gets logged in the event viewer whenever the problem occurs, I am not sure if this indicates there is a bug in the App Installer process itself, but it is making me wonder: Suspending Error: Unknown HResult Error code: 0xefffffff Function: Windows::ApplicationModel::Store::Preview::InstallControl::AppInstallManagerImpl::OnSuspend Source: onecoreuap\enduser\winstore\installservice\lib\appinstallcontrol.cpp (476) Skipping license manager: PFN Microsoft.DesktopAppInstaller_1.0.41331.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe Function: InvokeLicenseManagerRequired Source: onecoreuap\enduser\winstore\licensemanager\apisethost\activationapis.cpp (373) Note: I can also see these errors in the output if I try to debug App Installer using VS when the error occurs. For what it is worth, I also tried restarting all of the services that App Installer is calling (Windows Store Install Service, Game Service, Client Licensing and App X Service, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to clear the state for it.)23KViews0likes14Comments
