Re: Roadmap for PDF reader in Microsoft Edge
HotCakeX Thanks! Whilst that is no doubt useful, I mean that when using a stylus I can ink on a PDF and then without doing anything, I can remove my pen from the screen, scroll down with my finger, and then put the pen to screen again to ink. All without disabling/enabling the ink function, so it's a pretty fluid process. Sometimes though it's like Edge gets confused and mistakes my finger for the pen, so anything I put to the screen starts to draw.7.6KViews1like0CommentsRe: Roadmap for PDF reader in Microsoft Edge
I've submitted quite a bit of feedback on this through the browser itself, but the inking experience on PDFs definitely isn't up the same standard as the old Edge or any of the Microsoft applications. There's higher latency, the ink definitely comes out more jagged and less smooth, and it just feels much more cumbersome than say OneNote. Also, the lack of pen sensitivity in this browser makes it feel much less natural. There's also bugs where I can be writing with my stylus and scrolling fine with my finger, but then sometimes my finger starts inking instead and where I try to scroll, I end up drawing long vertical lines over the PDF. It's a real shame, because really features like inking are the few things that are and always have been totally unique to Edge.7.8KViews2likes3CommentsRe: Introducing web capture for Microsoft Edge
HotCakeX Whilst that may be the case technically, you might have misunderstood my reply as I am referring to the user experience, which is of course what the large majority of Edge users will be concerned about. To the user, the previous inking experience was seamless enough to make it feel as if you were simply writing on the web page - whether or not that was actually technically the case. Web Capture does not have that same seamless feel and takes you 'out' of the page, in my opinion.9.3KViews1like10CommentsRe: Introducing web capture for Microsoft Edge
HotCakeX I think justwantinkingback has a valid point though that the new inking experience feels a lot less like inking on the webpage and much more like inking on a screenshot, no matter how big that screenshot may be. I made a comment on pg.5 about how Inking now takes you out of the webpage by making it feel like a second screenshot-specific window is popping up, rather than just being a seamless interaction with the page, and I think this goes quite well with what justwantinkingback is saying, because that seamlessness is what makes the old version much better and more natural.9.3KViews0likes12CommentsRe: Introducing web capture for Microsoft Edge
A suggestion could be for the Web Capture inking tool to be more integrated into the tab window. When I take a simple screenshot using the tool I don't feel as if it takes me out of what I'm browsing at all - which is great. But, when I then add notes, it's definitely slightly jarring as it feels like the entire inking experience is a pop-up window and is taking me out of the page (although I know it's not a pop-up, it just looks like one). Maybe the inking experience can be stretched across below the favourites bar - and thereby making it feel like a single window - as if the user has never left the page at all? Thanks!6.8KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Roadmap for PDF reader in Microsoft Edge
fahdriyami The pen sensitivity is something I've picked up on too; inking in the new edge feels less natural to say, OneNote or any of the MS Office programs. I think the sensitivity is a big part in that, and also helps make the ink look more 'real' too - it doesn't quite match how I'd expect my writing to look, with the odd tapering here and there on letters and a small flick on the end of a signature. Another point on the inking is how it isn't quite fluid; the ink doesn't feel like it leaves the pen tip like actual ink, instead it sits on the page a bit fuzzy before it processes and smoothes itself out. Again, just comparing to OneNote etc, where I really enjoy the inking experience and it feels as close to real drawing/writing as I think we can get with plastic and glass.16KViews4likes0CommentsRe: Discussion - Set Aside Tabs and Warn on Close
Elliot Kirk As a student I'd really appreciate the set aside tabs function, as it allows me to resume my research from a particular day in a much easier manner than adding all of the tabs to a collection. Perhaps a new way of setting aside these tabs could be found under the 'Collections' tab, where a second option/tab within that area could be to set aside all currently-open tabs and title them after the date they were saved (like how it previously functioned). This would keep everything a user wishes to save for later in one single place.3.6KViews1like0CommentsRe: Discussion - Updating our interface with Fluent touches
Elliot Kirk I can agree with a lot of these pieces of feedback, as aesthetically it improves the look of Edge, makes it a bit more distinguishable from other browsers, and just makes it feel more integrated with the Windows UI language. I think effects like material would work really well, but if not applied too heavy-handedly. For instance, a Favourites menu drop-down or a Collections pane with a faint acrylic effect would look really quite smart, as would the page links on the new tab page. Big areas of empty space, like as seen in the Settings page, might not be best for these effects as that'd be a lot of transparency. The hover reveal effects with a cursor would be a really great addition. The UI components can be a bit more rounded than the old Edge for sure, and of course give the browser an Chrome-like look. I think bringing the rounding of corners more in line with apps like Outlook would be a lot more continuous with the wider system UI. I have no issues with the size of the address bar etc, however.4.2KViews1like0CommentsRe: Inking on Web Pages - Discussion
Elliot Kirk Hi Elliot, sorry for the long delay in getting back to you with this! In terms of new additions, yes - typing as well as drawing onto documents and webpages would also be useful, and maybe would allow me to copy key bits of text from elsewhere and overlay it on what I'm annotating so that I can see the bigger picture of what I'm working on. Another thing I've thought about before, which is particularly relevant as I mark up the journal articles I read whilst studying, is that it would great to be able to have layers of inking, where different layers of annotation can be turned on or off. This would be really quite useful when annotating media where there isn't much space around the content for the ink, and would also allow for better division/categorisation of my notes. Being able to access my notes on my mobile, either through the Edge browser there or via OneNote, would also be really quite useful; I normally save my annotations to OneNote so I can access them on any device.4.1KViews0likes1CommentRe: Inking on Web Pages - Discussion
Elliot Kirk For me, Inking is hugely useful. I'm a student so I spend a lot of time researching journal articles, websites and ebooks. A lot of my lecture and university-provided material is online too. The ability to ink all over these webpages, highlighting key points, scribbling notes and printing/sending to OneNote has been really useful for cutting down how much paper I have to use and for interacting with what I read and summarising it. I do this both during lectures and when studying at home. Aside from just academic stuff, I've been using it a fair bit when I've planned holidays/travelling With regards to tools, I think the ability to use a stylus such as a Surface Pen to draw in a variety of colours and thicknesses, and the ability to highlight, are the two big ones I'd personally like from this feature. Saving-wise, the ablility to print, to paper and/or PDF for sharing would be great, and the ability for any web annotations to be sent to OneDrive like in the old Edge. Thanks!13KViews5likes5CommentsRe: Top feedback summary for November 4
brianmenzie This is something I agree with and would really like to see from the new Edge. As a student studying a degree, the inking features on the old edge were great for annotating webpages and scientific articles when researching for my studies, and I'll be sorry to see all these features scrapped come January. I'd love to see a colour selector, thickness selector, erasing using a Surface Pen eraser tip, a ruler tool, highlighters, pencils - on both PDFs and webpages13KViews5likes0Comments
