I am running image backups of all my windows systems including Hyper-V installations. Most of the time, I can then later start virtual machines by just using the image as the OS disk. I can also enable nested virtualization and the run the existing vms in an extra sandbox or export them. Now I installed a new Hyper-V system using a newer refresh DVD from evaluation center. Unfortunately for that version enabling nested virtualization causes Hyper-V to go into repair mode (no clue what I should repair then). Any idea why? Both systems claim to be 10.0.17763 N&A Build 17763, but differ in the hotfixes listed. Drivers should be equivalent for OEM drivers, but for built-ins don´t know. Any idea? It is very convenient to know backups run virtually, and the fact that it does not work not just irritates but worries me. I am running into this issue the second time now. I log on as Administrator via RDP to Hyper-V and get access denied on many directories of c:\, including C:\, C:\Windows, and many others, but of course didn´t try all. Listing directories on other drives does work though. Same when logging in as a domain administrator. Last time I restored a known good backup and the issue was gone, but now reappeared. But I´d definitely prefer to understand and prevent the issue rather than restoring once a month. Any idea or suggstion? I installed a Hyper-V 2019 1903 with proper network and graphics card drivers to support save energy (s3), as the virtual machine services are not required all the time (a branch office installation) and I want to save energy then. I also installed an Ubuntu 18.04.02 virtual machine. Now when I save energy and wake the machine some time later, the clock in the VM is behind current time. I´d definitely appreciate if on resume of the host, the time within virtual machines would be adjusted automatically. Am I missing a prerequesite for this to happen automatically? I am working around the issue by saving the vms at suspend and (re-)starting them at resume, but this heavily depends on how exactly S3 is triggered. Mary Hoffman Ben Armstrong I think it is obvious that upgrade capabilities for Hyper-V make a lot of sense and there is a lot of interest in it. I really hope upgrade is considered for the next release. Thanks, Joachim21KViews0likes8CommentsRe: Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019 is live on the Microsoft Evaluation Center!!
Hi Mary, I am aware of KB4489899, and installed it on two systems, one pulling upgrades, the other does not. I was hoping the re-release is now a stable path forward. I am willing to accept manual workarounds, but in essence I am hoping for an upgrade path rather than clean installs. Whether the upgrade updates only what changed, or replaces everything but preserves my app installs and configuration - I don´t really care. Ben Armstrong Hi Ben, I do. Even running just virtual machines, the host needs configuration, ranging from bitlocker, domain join, backup, etc.. Some 3rd party software ties into the installation without import/export capabilities. I definitely appreciate upgrade support, in particular as frequency increases.. Thanks, Joachim23KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2019 is live on the Microsoft Evaluation Center!!
Mary Hoffman Thanks for making that available. I guess all of us have been waiting for it. I downloaded and tried to upgrade a virtual machine that isrunning a Hyper-V 2019 1809. First I encountered an 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 but that disappeared after increasing memory allocation (install could check for that). After increasing memory, setup proceeded, but then stopped with 0x80070490 -0x2000e "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during SET_PRODUCT_KEY operation). Any idea what I can try? I also want to upgrade a physical host - the VM was just to get experience first.. Thanks Joachim23KViews1like3Comments
