Re: Windows 11 Insider Preview 10.0.26200.5516 (ge_release_upr) installing Failure
Thanks for suggestion. Normally I would consider larger drive install. Considering the 'overhead' that Ai must take today it would seem to make some sense to have more space. That said, I don't understand why Windows seems not to take advantage of my 64gb memory and two GTX980 boards to speed some things up. Updates, etc. are slow. Back in the 'good ol' days' a large ram drive made things seem instantaneous.... . I know, buy a new machine...424Views0likes1CommentRe: Windows 11 Taskbar stuck on left screen of nVidia Surround triple monitor setup
Seems like whenever there is an Nvidia update my system has some quirks as well. Have tried numerous fixes. Last time I just shutdown the computer after Nvidia driver updated and then restarted. Then I checked to see what Windows said about the order of my displays first. I noted that the backgrounds on both monitors had defaulted to what the #1 monitor was. Then I checked the Nvidia program to see if the monitor / display numbers were the same as the Windows one. In my case shutting down completely and starting up again seemed to solve the monitor order problem. Previously I would find the Nvidia settings wrong just after installing an update. Apparently there are some processes that need to be completed by rebooting? Not a new problem here. I have an Intel based system with dual GTX cards and the drivers are usually very good. Just that the install process has some hiccups.524Views0likes0CommentsRe: How to create usb bootable install media for Windows 8.1 in 2025
Really need more info here. Do you just want to revive the original computer? Is the drive bad or just a boot problem? Sometimes if you can get the drive to startup it is possible ot clone it to a new drive as a replacement. It would save some work if the clone works. Otherwise you may need the original install disk and the drivers. Some systems that had Windows 8 really needed those drivers to function. Even if you decided to upgrade to Windows 10 the drivers would be important. One other idea: It is possible that due to the age of your system the CMOS battery is bad. I had two systems that 'forgot' the date (which can cause boot issues). Mine were those #2132 coin type batteries. Make sure the system is off and unplugged before changing though...16KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Is My Windows Booting Too Fast?
Many newer machines boot up very quickly due to improvements in processor and graphics. If you had an older machine you may be used to waiting a while for boot. Have you compared this with other similar computers, like the ones in the retail store? Even computer memory is faster today. About the only thing that might slow a new computer down is the internet connection. A newer router or fiber connection is much faster here too...103Views1like0CommentsRe: How to Replace an Unauthorized Windows 11 Product Key with a Genuine Key?
I think there is another command you need to employ to remove the license. It is to remove the license from the registry. the command you used is just one part. There is a site on YT called Britec09 where he helps to swap or move Windows keys. If the key you are trying to remove is an OEM key you cannot use it on another machine, FYI. If you have an older mechanical drive you may want to run some utilities to clean it up and format it before installing the new Windows. If you wipe the drive this way there will be no older license to require removal. It is possible that over time your Windows install has become corrupted and a clean install will solve a lot of issues. Given that your install from 'unauthorized source' did activate. I don't think that Windows would activate with a bad license... . Just a thought...323Views0likes0CommentsRe: Introducing Microsoft Edge Secure Network
The information seems to indicate that you need to have several things lined up. - Sign in to Microsoft account on computer (not the Local one) - Canary channel - Cloudflare - not sure whether Microsoft does this part or if you need to change your DNS / browser settings to Cloudflare. You can change to Cloudflare in Edge by clicking on three dots (...) upper right, and select Settings. On the left panel, select Privacy, Search, and Services. Scroll down to the Security heading in the right panel and you will see section titled "Use secure DNS to specify how to lookup the network address for Websites Turn it on if you want to setup Cloudflare. Down below that, click on "Choose a service provider". The dropdown in the box will offer you a number of choices including "Cloudflare(1.1.1.1)" . The box will then fill out with the necessary Cloudflare information. Note that this does not turn on the Secure Network automatically but sets up connections that may be helpful in getting it turned on. I can't think of any other possible prep you can do at this point other than what is stated in the Secure Network info / invited. It's up to Microsoft system to finish up (I guess). A reboot after changing all this might be in order as well. Recommend going over all the settings in the "Privacy, search, and services" while you are there just to check what you originally setup (or if an update changed it back). The 'strict' security setting might be a little too aggressive for some sites. If any issues with this on you may want to change to balanced. You may also want to checkout any active Extensions in Edge in case there might be a conflict with using Secure Network - just a thought...2.3KViews0likes1CommentRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
PapaBearJ Agree about the issues with Outlook. Seems like the process to move over to New Outlook at times creates added copies? Have seen several different results from the process on family devices, whether from self built to HP to Surface. All of them are a mess and seem to not straighten out. Not to mention the massive spam that creeps in at this point. One of my systems (LG Gram) seems to collect the spam in bulk. Turn it on after a couple of days and 20 plus ads for 'musk (phishing) heaters' or 'Tinder - you have a match'. Looks like 2024 will be messy... . Back on topic: Have tried using Favorites again as running out of screen to save links. Seems to work better now but not nearly as good as original Edge that had the tool improvements from Mr. Grey. Unfortunately, they don't convert to New Edge :-{ Really would like to see more attention to 'polishing' existing features than going from one new thing to another and none of them compatible or as functional. The final product to everyday users should be on a slower channel and be a refinement rather than experiment. You lose a lot of customers when you change so much they can't actually use the product. Just sayin' ...2.3KViews1like0CommentsRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
The issue I am working with is that of recovery. It has become easy to 'nuke' a failing Windows and restore it and (most) of the settings. However, a lot of user material is lost that the is either not in Microsoft orbit (they didn't make it) or that there isn't a function yet to save and recover. I found this with shortcuts I saved to tiles in Win 10 that got lost every time I had to replace the OS due to bluescreen/etc. I ended up with 'cleaned up' Windows but lost my 'tiled' links. Maybe there needs to be clarification on exactly what Windows will recover? Would this be different if you are a 365 / Cloud user vs off-line? Thus my move to doing shortcuts for the time being. I am looking forward to Collections being fully developed though.4KViews0likes6CommentsRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
I thought about the separate desktop as a solution just after typing the other one up. I don't have much experience with that and not sure of recovery options. Either way you can save them where you can see them all the time or put them in a single folder just for the one purpose. I think that some who are used to older systems would like to just click as drop-down panel with their shortcuts. Not a bad idea...4KViews0likes8CommentsRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
As an alternative you can create shortcuts on your desktop and name them for the chart types you use. You could then put them in a folder you can open with one click. Ex: 1. Highlight the link in Edge (the part with HTTPS), right-click and select 'Copy' ( your 'copy' selection will be saved at this point. 2. Now, go to blank area on your desktop and right-click. Move your mouse to display the line that says 'NEW'. A list of choices appears. Select 'Shortcut'. A new panel will open to 'create shortcut'. 3. Move your mouse to the blank rectangle below 'Type the location of the item'. Now, right-click to open another panel and select 'Paste' to paste the link you saved in Step #1. Click the word NEXT. 4. On the 'Create shortcut' panel type in the NAME you want to see to describe the thing (chart or other) that you want the shortcut to open when you click on it. Click Finish to create the shortcut. Options: A. To change the ICON for your shortcut: A1. Right Click on the Icon, select Properties. A2. On the properties panel that opens select 'Change Icon' A3. Select an Icon you want to use (left click on it). Then click OK. (not done yet!) A4. Click on the word 'Apply' at the bottom of the panel. The icon on your shortcut should change at this point. Now click 'OK' to close the panel and finish with the shortcut. After all that work: Click on your shortcut to test it out 🙂 Adjustments: If the link is not exactly what you wanted. You can right click the icon and select properties. You can remove the current link (URL) and paste in whatever replacement you want there. If the name needs to be fixed, you will need to right click the name under the icon and find 'Rename' in the options. (you might find it under 'show more options') and rename the shortcut. After you make a bunch of these you can create a blank folder: On desktop, right click on blank space and move mouse over NEW and select folder. Type in a name like 'Desk Folder' and press enter. You can then drag all the shortcuts into the folder and have them all available from there if you want to reduce clutter on the desktop.4.1KViews0likes10CommentsRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
It's a start. Need to have another window to open a folder and move items to it from any of the other Favorites folder. It gets kind of wonky when you want to consolidate folders and remove unnecessary 'similar' folders and duplicates. If you have saved hundreds of Faves over time this becomes a daunting task. Would be nice if the Faves tools would work similar to those for File manager.4.1KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Introducing Microsoft Edge Secure Network
Dennis5mile I still have it on Edge Canary. It appears as a 'shield' in the address bar. You may have to go into Edge Settings to turn it on. I seem to remember it getting turned off and then found something in settings to make it available again. They have been experimenting with this and turning it on for different users. It is really good feature and I verified that it works with regard to the IP identification. There is a Website for GRC.com that has a test to check your IP and I have used it to verify that the IP is adjusted due to the Secure Network Feature that works like a VPN. I dont recall if any of the other Edge installs have this feature. Only have seen on EdgeCan at this point. It is Oct 24, 2022 and I see the shield on my install. I know that the beta software is due to change without notice though...7.1KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Introducing Microsoft Edge Secure Network
For me the feature came, went, and came back again. It took a while to find the 'switch' Edge Settings to turn it on. When it did show up I found that it (sort of) worked like a VPN in hiding your IP address. I ran a program from GRC.com called Shields Up! to verify this and it worked well. I hope that Microsoft will consider that as an option to help secure systems that are targeted when the bad guys use IP to ID users for bad purposes. The feature only appeared in Edge Canary that I am aware of, and it did show up in Edge Settings - I think, under privacy and security. Just check for it when Edge updates and it 'could' be part of a package. You can also search for "How to setup Microsoft Secure network", in case Microsoft changes install process.69KViews1like1CommentRe: Introducing Microsoft Edge Secure Network
Dan_AI4GK In my experience some features arrive at different times. Some features may not show up too. I suspect that Microsoft is also looking at 'control groups' to measure what happens to the rest of Windows as well (like memory usage, etc. ) . Microsoft has said in the past that not everyone will get 'test' feature. Another possibility is that they may be rolling out to users who are regular submitters to Feedback Hub. They may not 'seem' like they are reading the feedbacks but they DO notice when the upvotes become substantial. If you look at the High volume upvotes you will usually see a comment on them in response. Note that there are issues that have a low priority (like updating user icons) that will not be their focus for a while... . Always suggest using feedback facility in Windows and in Edge to let them know what you see. Have a great day.69KViews0likes1CommentRe: Introducing Microsoft Edge Secure Network
BrandonMaslen Guess the new security feature appears only if you use Bing as default now? It appeared briefly for a day when I was testing Neeva and has disappeared in subsequent updates to EdgeCan. Looks like it has 'moved on' in version 104 to other users. It was interesting to see how it protected the IP of the PC when turned on. I ran a live comparison with Edge and EdgeCan and tested using utilities from GRC.com. Would be interesting replacement for VPN if you only needed the protection alone. Hope that future postings can explain more clearly how to find and use this. Was glad to at least test for day. Setting back to Bing seems to not bring it back.73KViews2likes0CommentsRe: Introducing transparent ads in Microsoft Edge Preview
Let me get this straight. Transparent ad providers will be allowed to 'force' trackers on users without ability to block them. Right ? This really muddies the waters on tracking protection, prevention, and privacy. I can understand ads appearing when appropriate, but not tracking and cookies being collected without my permission and then having these 3rd parties then sharing, selling, or breaching personal information that was not permitted in the first place. The continued 'generic' agreement button is out of touch with privacy concerns today and nearly all sites do not clearly or specifically detail exactly what information is collected and why. Back in the day... . Websites were concerned about being able to provide you with services without messing up your systems or files. Today it seems like they don't care and publish 20 -30 pages of legal jargon and technical terms that discourage users from reading them in the first place. When users spend 80% effort and get 20% results they no longer need the thing that was once a helpful tool. There is some corporate greed at work here at the expense of personal security and freedoms. How many people left broadcast TV when the minutes of advertising became greater than the viewing part ? Have to be careful about that cost / benefit ratio... Transparent Ads could be interesting program but no control of tracking / cookies is a fail. It crosses the privacy line ...157KViews2likes0CommentsRe: Syncing Collections for Stable and Beta
Still seeing 'syncing' an performance issues on Collections. The ability to sort Collections has been very helpful. Would suggest that the 'sort' program ignore the 'syncing' titles and move them to the bottom until the syncing process is over. It is a concern when a system is up over an hour and the Collections would appear to be still syncing. Is this related to any 'sleeping features' in Edge ? Just a thought. Like the way that Collections is shaping up and hope it will utilize more of the available resources on more powerful systems to speed it up (balancing act). Really appreciate your keeping us in the loop !4.2KViews0likes0CommentsRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
As to Favorites. You would still need to open Edge and then click on the 'Star' with the three dashes next to it. If your list of favorites is on that does not change often you have a couple of options : 1. You can save the Favorites (which are like web links) to the Start menu as tiles. Which does not require Edge to be open. 2. You could 'pin' your favorites to taskbar. 3. If you are using Edge 'vertical tabs' you could 'pin' your favorites as vertical tabs in Edge. However you might want to set the tabs to 'sleep' so Edge does not keep them all open and slow down your system. Most other options for this would require some 'programming and maintenance' on your part. How many favorites do you need to appear on the desktop and how often do they need to be changed or updated ? Saving the favorites to the Tiles in Start seems to be the easiest to maintain. Note: There is a way to display a list of Favorites across the top of the Edge window. The ones displayed are Favorites that are saved to the Favorites Bar folder in Favorites. 1. Click on the three dots (upper right) in Edge. 2. Click on the word 'Favorites' in the dropdown that appears. 3. Click on the three dot menu in that dropdown menu. 4. Click on 'Show Favorites Bar' . 5. Click on 'Always' to display the Favorites Bar in Edge. You can follow the same steps to Turn the feature off by selecting the alternate choices. You can edit the Favorites Bar folder in Favorites to choose what you want displayed. Recommended : Try out the Collections option to save your links / favorites instead. Collections is an easier way to read them and allows you to even add notes. Collections is still under development and the organizational tools that are being added make it more versatile than Favorites for some things. Collections icon is the one on the menu bar with the square with the + plus sign in it .6KViews0likes16CommentsRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
Trevor Appleton To save a favorite to Desktop : 1. Open the favorite in Edge 2. Click on the three dot menu ( ... ) upper right corner and hover your mouse over 'more tools'. 3. You can select 'Pin to Taskbar' to keep it there. or... 4. To save to Desktop : - Click the 'Pin to Start' choice and save to Start menu first. It will then create a tile of your favorite. - Then click and drag the favorite tile you saved tot the Start Menu to the desktop anywhere you want. When dragging from Start menu a 'link' will be created on the desktop you can place anywhere on the desktop .5.9KViews0likes18CommentsRe: Introducing the new favorites experience in Microsoft Edge
Thanks for the run down on Favorites. Will be giving this more attention this week. Previously with Legacy Edge was using an app from Emmet Gray to 'organize favorites'. (he was careful to point out that this could be not used with NewEdge ). Am enjoying the new 'organization' tools in Collections hope that doing a search on them is possible.6KViews0likes0Comments
