Currently, the M365 Copilot app on a phone allows releasing jobs from a Follow Me queue by scanning the QR code on a printer, but seemingly arbitrarily, it doesn't work (and isn't supported) on an iPad.
iPads, as a one time purchased multi-purpose device that doesn't require a data plan, are FAR more common for an employer to be issuing to all staff than company phones.
As a school district, all our teachers have district iPads. They do not have district phones. There are HR, legal and union considerations to trying to force someone to use a personally owned expensive device for work, and some people don't even have smartphones (flip phones still exist!).
If users could release jobs on an iPad (which we issue) we could require Secure Print / Follow Me and stop adding individual printer shares.
As long as it requires a cell phone, we cannot. We can't make a device the district is not purchasing a hard requirement for work.
Please fix Universal Print job release via the M365 Copilot app on iPads to work like it does on an iPhone.

Thanks for explaining the school district's constraints. We understand that staff should be able to use district-issued equipment rather than be required to provide a personal phone.
The iPad restriction was part of the old Microsoft 365 Copilot secure release implementation. Since your post, the new Universal Print portal has become available and supports compatible iPads and other tablets through a browser.
For commercial customers: https://print.cloud.microsoft.
On a district iPad, open the portal in your organization's approved browser, sign in with the work account, and select Secure release to use the in-portal QR scanner. No separate Universal Print app or PWA installation is required. Existing device, browser, and camera policies still apply.
If this does not work on your iPads, please share the iPadOS/browser versions and what fails through Microsoft Support so the specific configuration can be investigated.
