SCDPM 2022 Storage issue

I'm putting together a new server, with Windows Server 2022, SQL 2019 and DPM 2022.

I'm at the point of adding storage but I'm running into an issue with DPM "seeing" the storage.

It's configured with...

Mirrored disk for OS.

3 Disks (Raid 5) for DPM

I've tried all sorts of ways...

Create the Raid and not initialize.

Create the Raid and initialize, leave unallocated.

Both with MBR and GPT. Both basic and dynamic.

Nothing works.

Right now, my only guess is that all the physical drives are on the same controller channel.

Would this be a problem? In disk manager, it shows as 2 different disks.

I've used the first few versions of DPM, when they first came out. It looks like not much has changed. But maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Thanks

  • So, I'll answer my own question...

No, the disks do not need to be on separate channels.

Not sure if this is new to 2022. But I had to....

Created the virtual disk, on the raid controller..

Open Disk Manager and initialize the disk to GPT.

Create a new volume and format it using ReFS.

I even had to give it a drive letter, so DPM could see it.

This goes against all previous practices and documentation.

I could not find anything telling me to do this. I just happened to read, that since DPM2016 the volume gets formatted to ReFS. But I assumed this was an operation that DPM used, while configuring storage, not that I had to do it myself. Oh well, live and learn.

Hope someone finds this informative and doesn't waste a week, trying to figure it out.
