We are excited to announce the latest version of the Surface Hub operating system, Windows 10 Team 2020 Update, is now available for preview through the Windows Insider Program.

This Windows Insider Preview release delivers major improvements to device deployment and manageability along with the latest Windows 10 features. It’s available for both the first-generation Surface Hub 55-inch model and the latest Surface Hub 2S 50-inch device. Support for the first-generation Surface Hub 84-inch model will be included in the final release of Windows 10 Team 2020 Update.

What's new in Windows 10 Team 2020 Update

Improvements for Azure Active Directory Joined devices

This update addresses top customer requests, starting with full support for organizations using Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) to manage their Surface Hub devices:

  • Single sign-on (SSO) for Azure AD joined devices:
When users sign in with their Microsoft 365 credentials to “My meetings and files”, their user credentials flow seamlessly from app to app – including Microsoft 365 experiences in the browser.
  • Conditional access (CA) for Azure AD joined devices:
IT admins can deploy device-level security policies to their Azure AD joined Surface Hub to control access to organizational resources in accordance with corporate security and compliance requirements.
  • Support for non-Global admins for Azure AD joined devices:
Customers can choose a more granular set of admins within their admin hierarchy to manage Surface Hub. For more information, see Admin group management.

Improvements for device deployment and manageability

We also added features to help customers configure and manage their Surface Hub devices:

  • Modern authentication for cloud device accounts: Surface Hub supports Exchange Web Services (EWS) and Active Directory Authentication Library (ADAL) based authentication to connect to Exchange, allowing customers to deprecate the use of Basic authentication. For details, see Modern authentication on Surface Hub.
  • More than 20 new and updated mobile device management (MDM) policies: These policies give IT admins improved control over multiple device settings including: app updates from the Microsoft Store, wireless projection settings such as Miracast over infrastructure, network settings such as Quality-Of-Service and 802.1x wired authentication, and new privacy/GDPR related settings. For more information, see the following resources:

Improvements for meeting and collaborating on Surface Hub

Finally, this update introduces significant improvements to help end-users meet and collaborate on a Surface Hub device:

Support for the new Microsoft Edge:
Customers can install the new Microsoft Edge, which has been rebuilt from the ground up to bring you world-class compatibility and performance, the security and privacy you deserve, and new features designed to bring you the best of the web. For details on installing the new Microsoft Edge, see Install and configure the new Microsoft Edge on Surface Hub.

  • Deploy Microsoft Teams faster: Microsoft Teams is included as the default Meetings, calling and collaboration app on new Surface Hub devices which can be changed or configured via MDM or directly on Surface Hub using the Settings app. For more information, see Deploy Microsoft Teams.
  • Support for Proximity Join with Microsoft Teams:
Proximity Join enables users to take scheduled Microsoft Teams calls on a nearby Surface Hub using their laptop/phone, or seamlessly transition an in-progress meeting to a nearby Surface Hub. Windows 10 Team 2020 Update adds Mobile Device Management (MDM) support to configure Proximity Join, and the feature will be subsequently released as a Microsoft Teams update through Microsoft Store.
  • Support for Coordinated Meetings with Microsoft Teams:

In meeting rooms that feature a Surface Hub and a Microsoft Teams Room device, or spaces with two Surface Hub devices, Coordinated Meetings enable users to easily leverage both devices during a Microsoft Teams meeting. With a single tap, users can join a meeting from either device and maximize screen real estate by showing video feeds on one device, and a digital whiteboard or content on the other. Windows 10 Team 2020 Update adds Mobile Device Management (MDM) support to configure Coordinated Meetings, and the feature will be subsequently released as a Microsoft Teams update through Microsoft Store.

  • Passwordless sign-in using FIDO2 security keys: Using FIDO2 security keys, customers can quickly and easily sign into Surface Hub without having to type in usernames and passwords. Combined with Single Sign-On (SSO), this feature provides fast and seamless authentication to files, apps, and websites during a meeting. For more information, see Configure passwordless sign-in on Surface Hub.
  • Improvements to passwordless sign-in using Microsoft Authenticator: For organizations that use Azure AD, users can use the Microsoft Authenticator app to sign in without having to type in usernames and passwords. Additionally, users can sign-in using their preferred email aliases in Azure AD in addition to their User Principal Name (UPN). For more information, see Sign in to Surface Hub with Microsoft Authenticator.
  • Dual-pen inking on Surface Hub 2S: Users can whiteboard and collaborate side-by-side on Surface Hub 2S using two Surface Hub 2 Pens. The firmware updates required to enable dual-pen inking will be released with a subsequent update.

Great work Yoav and the rest of the team. Looking forward to trying some of the improvements, especially Edge as we're rolling it out now and EWS as we've switched off basic auth for everything except our device accounts now.

Is there any plan (or does this update include) allowing Surface Hubs to join a Teams Live Event broadcast?

Brass Contributor

I'm so so so very excited about this update! Nicely done Team. Absolutely nailed it.

Here's how I felt reading this blog post - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHBPnmXBm0g

Brass Contributor

I installed the update yesterday and pushed Edge Beta... first off, this process takes a LONG time. They say it in the instructions to give it 4 days to do automatically, it look at least 10 hours manually running through everything.

@TParkinson - I just tried a live event and I'm happy to say, yes, with the new Edge (Chromium) you can join live events (still no presenter role).

Teams running in Edge Chromium on Surface Hub - Pre Live MeetingTeams running in Edge Chromium on Surface Hub - Pre Live MeetingTeams running in Edge Chromium on Surface Hub - During Live MeetingTeams running in Edge Chromium on Surface Hub - During Live Meeting

What's more, you can now join Zoom calls (it's annoying cause Zoom doesn't give you the link out the gate, but after it tries to download, you can press 'launch zoom' and it'll give you the option to join via the browser - which works!)

Copper Contributor

@Jody Finch great work!

Just out of curiosity, do you know if you can change the speaker settings within the Teams app on the new device?

Any glitches so far?

We have a few Gen 1 with Ceiling Speakers, but can't get them working through the Teams App. We only can select the Microphone.

@Paul Maranzano @Jody Finch

Teams live events is supported on the browser if you're an attendee.

If the Surface Hub's account is made a presenter you can join the event using the Teams app from the Lock Screen or Start menu - that will launch the Teams app on the Surface Hub with the existing functionalities.

Copper Contributor

Will this version allow the installation of any remote control software e.g. Teamviewer?

Microsoft

@Nigel_Gibb Surface Hub only supports the installation of UWP apps from the Microsoft store.

Copper Contributor

@Yoav Barzilay As a developer I found an issue in UWP API on this Insider Preview : what is the best way to report it ?

Microsoft

So @PascalFresnay,  All issues should be reported through Microsoft Service & Support (CSS) or your Microsoft Premier support team.  Keep an eye on the known issues list too: Known issues: Windows 10 Team 2020 Update Preview Build.

Silver Contributor

@Yoav Barzilay, when does the new Windows 10 Team 2020 Update roll out?  I don't mean in preview but in final.

Microsoft

@Jeffrey Allen We will communicate the GA date at a later time.

Silver Contributor

Thanks @Yoav Barzilay, I hope it's soon.  While our offices remain closed I can see two people maybe using our two hubs for online meetings and the new version would do a better job than the current one.

Copper Contributor

Can anyone confirm if the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update can be deployed onto the 1st gen Surface Hub devices to enable support for Teams?

Silver Contributor

@Grant_F, according to documentation I’ve seen the final version will work with first gen Hubs.

Microsoft

@Grant_F The Windows 10 Team 2020 Update Public Preview can be installed on Surface Hub 55" and 84" (First Generation), and on Surface Hub 2S.

Please make sure you read the list of known issues prior to installing the update.

Microsoft

Also @Grant_F  you don't need to run the Windows Insider Preview version to enable support for Microsoft Teams.  You can do that with any Surface Hub today.  See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/MicrosoftTeams/teams-surface-hub for instructions.

Copper Contributor

Insider Update will is not showing up on my Surface Hub 2S. i followed exactly the guide but if i click "check for updates" no Insider is showing up. The latest CU for 08/2020 was successfully installed.

Any hints? I waited also 3-4 days. The device is joined to Azure AD.

Copper Contributor

I am trying to follow the instructions, but I can't get the surface hub to recognize that my account is registered in the insiders program. It just gives me the option to switch or register. Register just takes me to the flight page, since it is already registered... What am I missing?

Microsoft

@marc_hem @Navik57

Please ensure your logging is set to "Full" as described in the installation instructions.

Hi Yoav, I've been testing co-ordinated meeting join between Gen1 surface hub and MTR - works great, really seemless join!

Just one question, when joined with both devices, if I start a whiteboard session on the surfacehub, the MTR continues to show incoming video streams (perfect), but if I share any other apps on the surface hub, the MTR shows that shared app too so I lose the video view of remote attendees in the room. Is there a way to always hold the video view on the MTR reagrdless of which apps I share on the MTR?

Microsoft

@jrplex The default behavior of MTR when an app is shared is to present it in full screen, with Whiteboard as the exception.

To continue seeing video and content on MTR, the recommendation is to have an additional display.

Brass Contributor

 @marc_hem @Navik57 @Yoav Barzilay

The installation instructions. are actually incorrect if you configure it with intune. The issue is the OMA URI that should actually be ./Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/System/AllowTelemetry

This enables full telemetry and i was able to find the update on my hub after days of troubleshooting... :D

Copper Contributor

Great looking feature set @Yoav Barzilay

I have the exact same issue as @Navik57 ... Windows Insider Program..Get Started takes me to "Join the Windows Insider Program" with Register or Cancel, but my account is already registered (which I see when I hit Register). I have also set logging to FULL per the instructions. Cannot figure out what else might be stopping me from getting the build.

Brass Contributor

@RiseHub We have the same issue where we cannot set he Windows Insider settings to FAST because the Surface Hub is always pompting me to login with an account and that account is already registered for Windows Insider Program. When I login, I still don't see the setting that I should configure to FAST.
Did you find a solution?

Copper Contributor

Brass Contributor

@Chuck99 and @RiseHub - I hit this at first. Seemed to be a delay in the registration and acknowledgement. Have you tried restarting your hub since it was registered?

Brass Contributor

@Jody Finch  @RiseHub  Time did good for me too. I was able to do the update easily after a good nigh of sleep :)   Restarting the Hub did not work initially.

Thanks!

Copper Contributor

Wann kann man eigentlich die 85 Zoll Hubs Gen 2 in Deutschland erhalten? - When are the new 85 Zoll hubs available in Germany?

Ich erhalte keine Informationen! - I do not get any qualified information!

Copper Contributor

I've had 2 Surface Hubs set to Insider Preview build since last week. Manually checking for updates, and leaving over night for the maintenance window (1am) has done nothing either.

Is there no way to speed this up?

Edit: I've figured it out. I was able to register for Insider Build, however, for some reason, this reset the Feedback & Diagnostics setting to Basic, and then locked out the settings saying it was controlled by Insider.

I had to use the Telemetry ppkg file to force the settings to Full.

The guidance on how to get Insider to work on Hubs needs revising.

Copper Contributor

Hello @Yoav Barzilay :Thanks for this article!

Couple of questions:

1. Is there a way to defer this new updates on the hubs? How many days we can defer upto?

Currently we have a feature defer policy via intune .Will that cover this new Teams OS update as well?

2.How about for those devices that are OOB and we need to run a full windows update during first time setup(since some of the features/policies doesn't work on hub if hubs are out of date). How can we defer the new Teams OS update to happen from this device when we are running initially-since at that time hubs are not intune enrolled or neither its getting any defer policy.

We are more looking into phased approach for rolling any new updates which gives us time for full testings.

Thanks,

Copper Contributor

Props to @Nitecon

Had the same problem, after the preview-registration, telemetry is set back to basic and can then only be changed with the ppkg file, which you can find here (under "Install the Windows 10 Team 2020 Update Preview Build"): https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/surface-hub/surface-hub-install-2020preview

Microsoft

@Anishia_Gopi Thank you for your feedback.

  1. You can use Intune to defer the update. The Feature updtae defafer policy will work here too.
  2. If I understand your question right, You can install all quality updates (This is the type of updates we provided for Surface Hub so far) immediately, that'll put you up to speed with the latest available Surface Hub OS. As Feature updates are deferred, the 2020 update will not be immediately installed.
Silver Contributor

@Yoav Barzilay, it was announced at Ignite that the final comes out next month. Do we know approximately when?

Copper Contributor

@Yoav Barzilay  Any updates on when this will be GA?

Copper Contributor

Would be great to get some times on GA. We found it to fix some Miracast issues.

Hey,

Any possibilities to get domain account to the proxy configuration?

Surface Hub - proxy.png

Let us to select "domain account" and type account details, or even better, let us to select "use technical account for Teams and Calendar".

I have asked this to the Room System devices as well, and hard to understand why this has not been available since start?

Copper Contributor

Defer feature update in intune didn't work at all. Luckily most of the functions work, otherwise this could have been a total mess. Basic stuff like defer an update just have to work 100%...
