I agree with all the comments above. Many people are quite unhappy with this limitation. It would be beneficial for Microsoft to add a solution to 'Disable/Enable notifications at the global level' to the roadmap at the earliest.

maybe baseline could be more useful if you could choose what tasks or should make a baseline? how is it better than just tracking against project end date field...?

To all of those looking for centralized calendars for holidays etc across your projects, you can only do this through a model-driven app and with the "Business Closure" feature. The feature in this article is only for local calendars to the project.
