Cannot delete organisation from Teams
Hey, it comes up a lot. Here are the steps to take:
To leave an organisation with your personal account:
- Sign in to https://myapps.microsoft.com
- At the top-left, select the arrow and go to My Account
- Select Manage Organizations
Here, you'll see a list of organizations connected to your account.
- Select Leave next to the organization you want to leave
- Confirm that you want to leave
What if I can't leave?
In some cases, you may not be able to leave the organisation. This is likely due to a setting that they have that disables the ability for external users to leave the organisation. You can read more about this on the Microsoft Support page.

My rogue account did not appear under the organisations through Manage Organizations. However, through Settings within the Teams app, under the Accounts and orgs option, there was an option to leave the additional account. While this did send me back to the Manage Organizations website, where, while it still didn't show in the list, when I restarted Teams, the rogue account was gone.

So agree - so frustrating!! I wrote this on LinkedIn this week and reported it to the Microsoft Teams Product Group. Then just found your post.

HelloBenTeoh Any suggestions for when this doesn't work? I've managed to remove two of my previous organisations but I still have two attached to my personal account ask me to login when I request to leave?
- HelloBenTeohAug 01, 2025Bronze Contributor
Sorry, late reply, but you'd have to contact the organisation's admin to remove you.

You understand that this is the problem for many, right? And I find it absurd that I cannot leave a team. What if the organization if no more? We need to look at that exclamation mark for ever?

This works amazingly - Thanks much, appreciate it :)

This worked for me and I was finally able to leave a broken org after a few years! Thanks!

This doesn't work, at least for me... When clicking on "Leave", I'm redirected to the organization login page (I'm aked to login), but I just can't.... So I'm screwed.
- Lesley CrookAug 13, 2025MVP
Yes me also, all greyed out!

EUbkd did you every find a fix for this as I'm in the same situation. I could remove two organisations using the method recommend by HelloBenTeoh but for another 2 I'm asked to login. So frustrating!

Looks like the ONLY fix is to contact IT guys of the concerned organization so that they delete the subscription on their side...
I still have to try one more time in my case, I couldn't reach the right person last time I called 🙄

Same here - how do you delete if you are apparently 'Admin' which BTW I'm not?....OK, do the same but now pick 'Groups' and in there you can delete the Group 🤞

"Hey" that doesn't work. The accounts listed in the "Welcome to Teams" pick list in the desktop app aren't listed within the Organizations section of https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations. I think that's why so many people are complaining.

I had the same issue with the orphan empty organization.
I found a solution. Log out of the client, and then log back in. It should be removed once you log back in.
See if that works. - HelloBenTeohFeb 14, 2025Bronze Contributor
Yo! Thats a separate problem unfortunately. I have so many on my list :( I’ve seen that some people try and manually clear out their reg keys to resolve it but I haven’t tried.
- bchager6Feb 14, 2025Copper Contributor
Yo! Do you happen to know what the registry steps are? As much as I do not like to touch the registry…

Any way to do this if you get referred to Microsoft Authenticator when pressing Leave (and no longer access to that account through Microsoft Authenticator)?

HelloBenTeoh Hello Ben and all, what do I need to do to wipe an org out from my teams desktop app? Apparently it sill resides somewhere on my PC, because it disappeared from the web app, after I'd left the org in my account settings. In the desktop app it visually resulted in deletion of the org label. See my screenshots. Am on Windows 11 / latest version of MS teams. Thanks.

desktop app:
receive errors switching to the "ghost" org
- ChristophK10Oct 08, 2024Copper ContributorI have the same issue with the orphan organisation that once existed in my own microsoft environment.
How is it possible to delete it? - jabhawkBDFJun 10, 2024Copper ContributorWhen this happens what I found fixes the issue is to clear the local Teams data.
1. Select Apps > Installed apps, and then type Microsoft Teams in the search box.
2. Locate the New Microsoft Teams app from the results, select the More options button (...) on the right, and then select Advanced options.
3. In the Reset section, select Reset.
4. Restart Teams.
On restart the valid org's attached to the account are reconnected.- vanroanJun 11, 2024Copper Contributor
Thank you, but unfortunately that didn't work for me

Hi there,
have you tried to uninstall Microsoft Teams and then reinstall it? Furthermore, you can also give the reset option via system settings/apps a try to remove any local information.
Regards,
Hagel

HagelStern eventually, an easier fix worked. I simply logged out from MS Teams and after I'd logged back in, it was gone 😉
