The free version of Microsoft Teams has several features like meetings, calling, chat, calendar, and files, and on mobile you can use the new communities feature which soon will become available on desktop, too.
Teams (free) on desktop
The ‘Meetings’ feature in Teams (free) is like what you have been using in Teams for work or school. You can create instant meetings and share a meeting link for people to join, or you can schedule a meeting in your Teams calendar and invite people to it. Learn more about meetings in Teams (free)

Chatting or instant messaging via Teams (free) is easy and you can share photos and videos with your contacts. You can even reach out to non-Teams users in your conversations by enabling them to connect through phone numbers, by sending an invite through SMS.
