This week, screen recording is beginning to roll out to customers. The new screen recording tool in Microsoft Stream gives everyone a way to create videos for sharing knowledge, remote learning, leadership updates and other communications across your organization.

Easily create new videos with the web-based tool—no need to download anything to get started. Just open the latest version of Edge or Chrome and your Stream portal then, from the Create dropdown list, select Record screen.

Video creators can use options to record any window or screen, add mic or system audio, and include webcam for a personal touch.

Screen recording capabilities will continue to roll out over the next week. More functionality, including editing capabilities, will be coming soon! To learn more about the screen recording capabilities visit our documentation page

What does now available really mean?  I don't see this in our tenant yet.  When can I expect it to land?

Brass Contributor

@Luke Hoffman - I just checked and I do see it in our tenant so I'm guessing it's in process of rolling out currently.

This is really nice and a needed feature.

That 15 minute time limit... Our faculty will still be recording lectures/presentations and uploading them to Stream I guess. This will be good for quick how-to videos I suppose.

#timing, a day after I purchased Deluxe Screen-cast-o-matic  ;)  I need to be paying more attention to roadmaps.

Great addition to Stream - look forward to the editing functions coming to Stream, the other element of https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/roadmap?filters=&searchterms=25687.

@Campbell Smytheand anyone else looking for screen recording tools, there is also the option to use https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Record-your-screen-in-PowerPoint-0b4c3f65-534c-4cf1-9c59-40... in PowerPoint and https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/friends-social-activity/share-socialize/record-game-clips-game-ba... directly in Windows 10 :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes: - and for editing you can use the https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/27916/windows-10-edit-photos-videos in Windows 10.

Not available on our tenant ... localised in French DC !

When will it be deployed @Christina Torok ?

From the docs page:

Screen recordings are limited to a maximum length of 15 minutes. For longer content, break up your video into shorter segments.

If Stream supported Playlists then this would be very useful. We have lots of training videos that we'd like to put into a "series". I realize I can put them all in a channel but that doesn't support play order, and auto play of the next video, etc whereas a playlist would allow me to curate videos and send them directly to a user for watching.

Thanks @rs_oakford , I had run across that item but when I saw it was from 2017 I didn't have much hope . I added a vote though!

@Christina Torok, this looks like a good feature for nice quick how-tos but I hate this titled as now available since it hasn't rolled out to everyone.  I don't have it yet either as was mentioned above.

Iron Contributor

Perhaps it’s not a perfect tool yet, but it’s definitely a step toward right direction. Well done.

The recording feature should complete roll out over the next week - targeting 5/15 to be done worldwide. Thanks for all the feedback -- appreciate your input!

Brass Contributor

15 minute limit though?  A lot of instructors would like to use this for lectures, but that is absolutely not enough time.

Brass Contributor

Is there a specific reason why the camera window is 4:3? Most cameras, even webcams are 16:9, can that be an option?

Update: nevermind, I can see why narrowing in on the speaker's face is helpful.  I still wouldn't mind a 16:9 option though.

Copper Contributor

Is there anyway for admins to disable this feature? We may not want staff to record their screens.

Thanks

Microsoft

@MisterJohnson87 At the moment, all users who have upload rights have access to the screen recorder. You can disable screen recording access by disabling upload access. Thanks for bringing this up, this is good feedback for us, and we are tracking this request.

Copper Contributor

This is great and will make it a lot easier for many of our users to record short tutorial videos, demos, etc. But I agree that the 15 minute limit is very...  limiting. Will you increase it in the future @Christina Torok ?

Copper Contributor

Is there a way to use a virtual background while recording?

Copper Contributor

I agree that the 15 minute time limit is just not enough, if there is a voting for this feature to be upgraded please share :)

Are there any plans to provide the ability to assign sensitivity labels to videos so that they can be protected

Copper Contributor
I'm currently using Joyoshare Screen Recorder to record my desktop. It works great which can record videos in 1080P with sound. But I'm looking for a screen recording tool to film myself speaking to make some how-to videos, But t seems that Joyoshare program can't do this. What about the recording software in Windows Stream? If it can, what should I do? Thanks

15 minutes is too restrictive. Too many instructors, even after utilizing the likes of instructional designers' assistance, have 20+ minute teaching elements. I'm asked about this frequently now. We've tried to direct those utilizing PowerPoint to use the features of O365 PPT Recording, but this still does not fit with those explaining financial or accounting formulaic problem-solving examples. I understand the 15 minutes attention-span of millennials and gen-z's, but please remove this limitation.

Copper Contributor

I'm new. Can anyone help me know what to do?

Copper Contributor

It won't let me record.

Copper Contributor

@red_razor23 Can you help me? Like, now.

Copper Contributor

We have Stream on Sharepoint, I can only get the option to record my screen if I set camera to none and mic to none, then the option to record screen pops up.

This is different to all the training videos I find online. When I click create+ I don't get an option to "record screen", I can select "create" and then "Recording" a window pops up but I can not find any option to share screen within this window.  If I then set the mic to none and the camera to none, it then gives an option to record screen.

How do I record screen and sound (me talking) at the same time? Is there an instruction video for the type of set up we have (corporate) Stream on Sharepoint?

Brass Contributor

Can i add custom watermark in recording video?
