Transforming business processes is critical to unlocking the productivity possible with Office 365.   Building a great business app can include three components – interface, automation, and visualization.

As you may have seen on the Power BI blog, we’re excited to announce the preview of the Power BI web part for SharePoint Online, starting in First Release today.

Over the past year, we’ve been excited to share news about Power Apps and Flow and their evolving integration as the successors to classic tools for custom forms and workflow in SharePoint.   Together, PowerApps and Flow provide the building blocks for modern apps and automation.

So, we’re happy to augment the toolkit for low-code/no-code business with the inclusion of Power BI.  We showed this on stage at Ignite in September 2016 as part of our hybrid BI session, and now we're putting these exciting tools in your hands.

The new Power BI web part is an early preview.  We have many plans to enhance this web part further as we continue to deepen our commitment to reinventing business processes inside SharePoint.

The web part allows you to paste a URL to an existing Power BI report on modern pages, alongside our other modern web parts.   Thus, your reports will display on browsers, and the enhanced SharePoint mobile application for Windows, Android, and iOS.

The Power BI (preview) web part is available to Office 365 First Release  customers. You’ll see the web part if your Office 365 tenant administrator opted-in to the First Release program. If they didn’t, the web part will not appear in the list of available web parts.

The Power BI web part will be rolling out starting in February to First Release customers.   Production customers outside of First Release will receive this update later in 2017.  Please watch the Office 365 Message Center for specifics.

We’re excited for you to start using this feature.  Head over to our documentation  for more details.  This is a preview, and we’d love to hear your feedback. Share your ideas with us on this discussion thread within the Power BI Community.  Thanks!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: We are running the free version of Power BI. How does then new web part work with Power BI Free?

A: The Power BI web part requires Power BI Pro.

Q: I see that the web part is a “preview”. Do  I need to enable preview features in the SharePoint Online Admin console for the part to be visible?

A: The preview setting in SPO Admin has no effect on the Power BI web part preview.

Q: If I use the Power BI web part on a page with broad access, connected to a highly sensitive report, will the web part allow unauthorized users to gain access to the data?

A: The Power BI web part (preview) uses the same credentials that the user would have directly on the Power BI portal.  Users need permission to both the SharePoint modern page and to the underlying Power BI report.  All  security used on the portal will be in effect for reports viewed through the web part.

Q: Can I use the Power BI web part for dashboards ?

A: Presently the Power BI web part can only be used with Power BI  reports.
