Intune Device Licenses
Hello everyone,
I’m having a bit of trouble finding a straightforward explanation on how device licenses work, so I have a few questions I’m hoping someone can clarify:
- Are Android device licenses only applicable to corporate devices?
- If an Android device is no longer in use but hasn’t been removed by auto-cleanup rules, does it still consume a license?
- If we exceed our device license limit but have extra E3 or E5 user licenses, will that cover us?
- What happens if we run out of device licenses? Will new devices be prevented from enrolling?
- If a user has an Intune license and uses a corporate device, does that device also consume a device license?
I hope that’s clear enough. Thanks in advance for any insights!
Have a great day!
UpNorthIntune Hi,
1-Intune device licenses are generally intended for company-owned devices, rather than personal devices.
For personal devices, one user license is sufficient for management with Intune.2-Yes, if a device remains in the Intune portal without being removed, it will continue to consume a license until it is deleted.
3-E3/E5 user licenses (I guess M365 E3/E5) can cover device management for users. Each E3 or E5 license includes Intune for user management, allowing each licensed user to register up to five devices; however, this must be assigned to a user.
4-No, you will not be licensing compliant, however.
5-No, if the user has an Intune license (M365 E3/E5), the device generally does not consume an additional license. The user license covers the devices registered by that user (up to five), including enterprise devices.
I hope I have been of some help to you.
