Understanding the Intune device object and User Principal Name

For hybrid customers, Azure AD Connect's "In from AD - Computer Join" rule syncs registered owner from the on-premises Ms-DS-CreatorSID attribute, but only initially.

After that, I guess it lets AAD own the attribute, which makes sense for new computer flows.

However, I'm helping someone replace their old AAD Connect server and see that this rule wants to delete all the registered owner attributes, since this is actually null on-premises (there is no rule flowing the attribute down after set in the cloud). Will AAD ignore these deletes, or do I need to modify the rule so that I don't nuke a bunch of functionality?
