Today, we're posting a message in the message center to all customers who have PC's managed using the PC software client or the Storage Add-On licensing offer. Read the full message below. We'll continue to update this post as needed.

Microsoft Intune will retire support for the Silverlight-based Intune console on October 15, 2020. This retirement includes ending support for the Silverlight console configured PC software client (also known as the PC agent) used for Windows PC management. In addition, Intune will end the Intune Storage Add-On licensing offer which was only used for app storage in Silverlight. Move your day-to-day Intune administration from Silverlight to https://devicemanagement.microsoft.com.

How does this affect me?

Our telemetry indicates you have PC software client managed Windows devices that will need to be MDM enrolled in order to stay managed by Intune past the above-reference date.

What do I need to do?

As you move forward with PC refresh or updates, enroll new Windows 10 devices into the MDM channel instead of using the PC software client. For existing PC software client devices, you’ll want to remove the PC software client and enroll the device in the MDM channel instead. Basic steps are:

  1. Get familiar with device administration at https://devicemanagement.microsoft.com.
  2. Recreate your existing Windows 10 policies as MDM policies. Note that many device management policies were migrated several years ago as part of the admin console migration, so double check device management in Azure before you create any policies.
  3. Review reporting in Silverlight to find those PC’s that are managed by the PC software client.
  4. Decide the right modern enrollment mechanism for your organization. You can review your options here: https://docs.microsoft.com/intune/windows-enrollment-methods.
  5. Unenroll devices with the PC software client and re-enroll the device using MDM. We strongly recommend you update to the latest version of Windows 10. As previously announced, Intune ends support for Windows 7 on January 14, 2020.
  6. If you do use the Intune Storage Add-On licensing, note that it is not needed when you use the MDM channel for managing your PC’s with Intune. Ensure apps are loaded using any of the mechanisms described here: https://docs.microsoft.com/intune/apps/apps-add.

This change will allow you to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities available through the MDM channel for Windows management. We encourage you to migrate as soon as possible, and no later than October 15, 2020. After that date, the Silverlight-based Intune console will no longer be accessible. PCs managed with the PC software client will stop receiving security updates and apps, and will no longer be able to be configured.

Contact your partner of record or support if you need assistance.

Let us know if you have any questions on this change.

If the old agent software is still installed on PCs after October 2020, will it be automatically removed? Or will we need to do this manually?

Step 3 is "Review reporting in Silverlight to find those PC’s that are managed by the PC software client." Can you provide the exact steps necessary to do this? I was notified that I have PC-software-client-managed Windows devices, but it has been a long time since I worked in the Silverlight console. It may be that all the devices I enrolled have since been retired. When I click on the link provided for the Silverlight console (https://manage.microsoft.com/), I see a bunch of warnings about the move from the legacy client to the MDM solution, and I'm not sure how to proceed after that. I am hesitant to click through all the warning messages because I don't want to inadvertently revert to actually using the legacy client for any new enrollments.

@Remco Kloosterman, we’ll check with the PM and get back back to you on this.

@David Schrag, If you’d like to avoid opening the Silverlight portal, you can find the devices in the Azure portal by using the following:

1. Go to Intune -> Devices
2. Click Azure AD devices under Manage (they won’t appear under All devices)
3. Look/search for devices with an OS value of Desktop instead of Windows

Hope this helps!

Yes, that helped to find the devices. Now how do I remove the legacy client so that I can enroll the machine with MDM? If I drill down into a machine and click Manage, I'm taken to the All Devices view, which as you point out does not show the device I'm working with. I found an article on removing the client (https://www.petervanderwoude.nl/post/uninstall-the-microsoft-intune-client/) but it looks like I'd have to use the Silverlight console for that. I have no objection to going back to the Silverlight portal, as long as there's no risk of somehow triggering an installation of the legacy client where it's not wanted.

@Intune Support Team Thanks! Another thing I noticed is that the notification in the Silverlight Portal is displayed in strange characters and not translated into Dutch.

@David Schrag, Steps on retiring a device via the Classic (Silverlight) Portal can be found in our docs here: Classic Portal - Retire a Windows PC. If there's anything else we can help expand on, please let us know!

@Remco Kloosterman, Thanks for the report! We've reported this to engineering - It's another reason to move off of the Silverlight portal .

I activated the Silverlight portal and found the devices with the legacy client. When I select a device and click Retire/Wipe, the next dialog box advises that "Selective wipe is not supported for Windows devices that are joined to Azure Active Directory." My devices are joined to AAD, so how should I proceed?

Hi @David Schrag, currently looking into this, we'll reply back as soon as we have more insight!

Occasional Contributor

Hi, @Intune Support Team . Any update on retiring AAD-joined devices?

Occasional Visitor

Can someone help me on how we can proceed to unenroll windows 10 1703 devices from legacy Intune and then auto enroll to MDM

@David Schrag, thank you for your patience, we've still checking with the team on this, and will get back with you once we have some additional info to share.

@Neeraj_Kumar, auto-enrollment can be configured by using the following steps here: Set up enrollment for Windows devices.
If there's anything further we can help clarify, please let us know!
