DistributionGroup with 20.000+ recipients, will it hit the recipient limits?

Brass Contributor

Hi you all,

We are a community college with 20.000+ students.

Now I was asked if it was possible to address them all at once.

So I've searched and found the sending limits on this page Exchange Online limits

There I can read that a distribution group is counted as one recipient, so far so good.

But it addresses more than 20.000 recipients, will I run in the second limit of our subscription of 10.000 recipients a day?
And if so, what does EXO do? Will it deny all after the first 10.000, will they disappear in cloud?
Or will they be queued and send on a later time?
And will it affect all other mail traffic that day, so no one is able to send a message until the other day?

I can't find the answers, hopefully some can clear this out for me?

Thanks in advance.

If you send directly to the DG address, it will count as a single entry against said limit, regardless of how many recipients the DG has. You will be fine.
