Cannot disable a mailbox whose attribute msExchRemoteRecipientType: 8

Hi All,

We are in a hybrid Exchange setup, we have room mailboxes are existing in Office365 that are basically created as remote room mailbox in Onprem Exchange. Out of which some room mailboxes are created in 2014 and recently i got a request to delete these.

When I checked in Onprem Exchange I was not able to find these remote mailboxes in Exchange Onprem and not sure why maybe they would have been removed somehow, which is why i guess the primary email adddress of these mailboxes were updated to company.onmicrosoft.com in Office365.

So, I ran Disable-Mailbox, the cmd seemed to run successfully, but the mailbox wasn't disabled, so when further checked in ADSIEdit, i see that there are below attributes

msExchRemoteRecipientType: 8

msExchRecipientSoftDeletedStatus 0

msExchMasterAccountSid S-1-5-10

when i googled, i saw msExchremoterecipienttype: 8 to be DeprovisionedMailbox, i am not sure what this exactly means, secondly when i ran cmds in Office365 i saw below attributes:

CloudExchangeRecipientDisplayType : 7

I know we have different workaround ways to get rid of this mailbox, but want to understand on these attributes and why this object is not visible in Onprem Exchange and how they are actually supposed to be deleted.

  • Hi PoorMens_Bravo,

In a hybrid Exchange setup, when you come across a mailbox with the attribute "msExchRemoteRecipientType: 8", it means that this mailbox is a DeprovisionedMailbox (Cloud).

    msExchRemoteRecipientType (msxfaq.de)

This type of mailbox was previously synced to Office 365, but it got removed from the on-premises Exchange server. It could have been deleted directly from the on-premises server, or the associated user account might have been deleted.

The attributes you mentioned can are providing more info about the mailbox:

    - "msExchRemoteRecipientType: 8" confirms it's a DeprovisionedMailbox (Cloud).
    - "msExchRecipientSoftDeletedStatus 0" indicates it's not in a soft-deleted state, meaning it's not recoverable within a retention period.
    - "msExchMasterAccountSid S-1-5-10" holds the SID of the user account linked to the mailbox.

Since the mailbox is no longer visible in the on-premises Exchange server, you can't disable it using the usual method like "Disable-Mailbox" cmdlet.

To deal with this mailbox, you might have to remove the associated user account from the on-premises Active Directory.
