Edge (Chromium based) in Windows LTSC

Frequent Visitor

We have gone through many reviews of OS support channels and in our industry ( Banking ) we will require that a portion of our machines stay on the LTSC service branchs, upgrading to the next version every 3 years if it meets and passes testing. In our LTSC environment we want to use the Chromuim based version of Edge when the Enterprise model is available. I can not find any documentation that references whether this new version of Edge will be supported in one form or another on the  LTSC support channel.  Can it be installed as a stand alone application in LTSC? Will SCCM support updating it via Software Updates in LTSC? If someone could provide this information or maybe point me in the right direction for these answers I would appreciate it. We have other options for browsers but we like the idea of Enterprise Edge. Thank you.

@DavidGarn I'm happy to say yes, Microsoft Edge is supported on Windows 10 LTSC.

For now, you can download the MSIs that are available here: and deploy them using SCCM leveraging its general capabilities for that ( ).  We are actively  looking at improving the experience for managing Microsoft Edge updates in SCCM, but the above should get you started.

What's about Windows Server 2016/2019 (RDP)?

@Thilo Langbein Yes, it is supported there as well.

here is the article about Edge insider stable roll out

To help our customers become more secure and up-to-date, Microsoft will distribute Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) to Home and Pro Edition devices running Windows 10 version 1803 via Windows Update. This process will start after January 15th, 2020 and more information will be available on that date.

The Blocker Toolkit is intended for organizations that would like to block automatic delivery of Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based) on devices running Windows 10 version 1803 and newer that are running the Home or Pro Edition of Windows. All other versions and Editions of Windows are excluded from being updated automatically. Devices running Windows 10 Home or Pro Edition that are joined to an Active Directory or Azure Active Directory domain, are MDM managed, or are WSUS or WUfB managed, will also be excluded from this automatic update."

Specifically, no enterprise versions of Windows will be automatically updated, meaning the Blocker Toolkit is just needed if you run Home and Pro on your enterprise network, and if they are not joined to a Domain.

@HotCakeX With the recent update today, I still do not see it on my school computer. I could use the beta version without admin privilege, now I can't.

Microsoft hasn't started rolling out the new Edge through Windows update yet. also since you are using Enterprise edition, you won't get the new Edge automatically, specially when you are using LTSC branch.

you can get it from here though

Sadly, I can't use it then.

I don't don't know why Microsoft is not pushing it to the schools. If this goes on then,

people from their early ages i.e. from student life will keep on using Google Chrome. It is in their home PC and pre-installed on their school computers by school IT department; they don't have to take extra efforts to sync or have continuity in their user experience. And once again nobody will not even try to use Microsoft Edge.

But it's just how LTSC is..people who use LTSC branch chose that for this reason
soon Pro and Home editions of Windows 10 will start receiving the update automatically from Windows update but for Enterprise editions, you have to do it manually.

@Steve Rugh , is IE mode in LTSC supported too?

It is not mentioned in prerequisites at below link:

It should be. because of 2 reasons:
1. LTSC has IE.
2. Edge setup is not different on LTSC compared to Pro.

just to confirm that Edge for business can be installed manually if you have access to admin ID

use IE to browse: the semi annual release channel:

choose the channel, release and platform; finally click download and install after.

I chose stable 84, build 84.0.522.63, platform windows 32 bit for my x32 w10 LTSC
