Just like the text in the above image suggest, it can be costly for students to get real world experiences as the tools and services out there are not free and because there is no substitute for hands-on experience hence the GitHub Student Developer Pack.

It is a partnership between several service providers and GitHub to offer some of their services for free for VERIFIED STUDENTS. If you activate your GitHub Student Developer Pack, you will have access to several free services e.g.

You get access to free 12 months subscription of Canva’s Pro tier, 1 SSL Certificate free for 1 year, Free access to 25+ Microsoft Azure Cloud Services plus $100 in Azure Credit, and many others. That’s incredible if you may ask me :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:.

WHY Activate GitHub Student Developer Pack

Once you activate your GitHub Student Developer Pack, you don’t need to get verified to access over 20 other services that came with it e.g. Microsoft Azure Benefits. The GitHub Verification process is sufficient to claim the benefits.

How to Activate GitHub Student Developer Pack

To show you how easy it is, let’s read from one of the NG30 Days of Learning students who shared this process with the learning group

How I got my GitHub benefit without stress under 5mins =)

  • I am a registered GitHub user before now, in case you already have a GitHub account, just use this link :link: https://aka.ms/30DLGithubActivate  and login into your account.
  • After successfully logging in, "add your school email in the email section" and go back to the page to refresh and you will see your school email there.
  • Add what you want to be using GitHub for in the appropriate box, then proceed.
  • Then, you will be prompted to snap your school ID card (I used my school ID card) and I actually used my phone for it as my laptop have spoilt🥺
  • I snapped myself with the ID card, then boom that was all.

It was accepted and I was sent a mail almost instantly that my registration was successful.

As you can see, it is very easy and simple. If you need a visual representation, check the video below:

In another article, we will show you how to activate your Azure for Student Credit.

Now over to the next Agenda

How to Create a GitHub Profile Page - Let’s quickly clarify this, what exactly is GitHub?

GitHub is a code hosting platform for version control and collaboration. It lets you and others work together on projects from anywhere.

Aside hosting your code on GitHub and collaborating with others, you can also create a public profile for yourself which in itself is a form of Technical Digital Resume.

How then do I create one for myself?

I believe by now you already have a GitHub account, if No, follow this video for a guide and walkthrough

Congratulations, you now have your digital profile and can share it with your community and audience. Mine is https://github.com/theoyinbooke you can connect with me by following my account.

Action Point:

Your immediate action point is to tweet your profile on twitter and make a post on LinkedIn using this hashtag #NG30DaysOfLearning.

Why Should You Do this? Sharing your progress in the open can open several doors for you. They are public evidence to show your potential recruiter about your growth journey.
