Over the course of 2022, we will be requiring all educators and IT Admins using version 3.3 or older of the OneNote Class Notebook Add-in (COM add-in) for Desktop, to update to version 3.4 or higher. The current version of the OneNote Class Notebook Add-in is 3.4, but many educators are still using older versions, in some cases versions for 3 years ago.

Note: The Class Notebook Add-in for OneNote Desktop is not being retired, but we are asking educators and organizations to update to the newer and modernized version, which is version 3.4 or higher by December 31st, 2022.

The Class Notebook COM Addin for OneNote Desktop applies to:

  • OneNote 2013 Desktop
  • OneNote 2016 Desktop
  • OneNote 2019 Desktop
  • OneNote 2021 Desktop
  • OneNote Desktop for Office 365

For Educators and organizations that do not upgrade their old OneNote Class Notebook Add-in to version 3.4 or higher, the toolbar UI will stop working properly on December 31st, 2022. The reason for this is that we have a set of older technologies we need to retire and when these technologies are retired, the toolbar for old Addin versions 3.3 or less will not work properly.

Summary

  • After December 31st, 2022, educators using old versions of the OneNote Desktop COM Add-in (3.3. or less) will experience issues using the toolbar buttons in their add-in.
  • Version 3.4 will be the fully supported version starting December 31st, 2022.
  • The Class Notebook Add-in for OneNote Desktop is not being retired, but we are asking educators and organizations to update to the newer and modernized version
