High renderer memory usage on Beta/Dev compared to other browsers on Mac

Is having a high renderer memory usage normal for the Mac versions of the browser? On idle it uses about 3GB of memory for the renderer alone even with no tabs open. Both Chrome and Firefox sit at around 400MB in comparison.
