Edge won't open in Ventura

Copper Contributor

I am running macOS Ventura 13.3.1 (a).  I just downloaded and installed Edge for Intel and it doesn't open.  I click on the Dock Icon for Edge, it bounces like it is going to open then nothing.  It just doesn't Open.  I click on it again, and the same thing happens.  No error messages, no popups, nothing.  I rebooted and the issue remains.  I've double-checked for updates to macOS and MS AutoUpdater for Edge updates, and nothing is available; everything is up to date.

Not sure why it happens, but I need it fixed.  I use both Windows and Mac and need Edge working for both.  Chrome is not an option for what I'm doing (without getting into it).

Is anyone else having this issue?  Does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks.

Ok. I did a bit more research and testing and found a solution.

The issue is that the installer does not give the Edge library permissions to the current user.

Navigate to ~Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge
Add Read/Write permission for the current user.
- I suppose you can set Read/Write for every user, just the same.

Simple enough.

@DaddyFixIt8472 , thank you for reporting the issue and sharing the potential fix that you've identified. We will be sharing both of these with our Installer team for further investigation.

I followed your suggestion and although I downloaded MS Edge and installed it, it doesn't show up under ~Library/Application Support/

Any other suggestions? I was really excited about this one...

Thanks!

Hmmm, that is unusual.  Typically when a program is run for the first time, it creates an entry in the ~/Library/Application Support/ folder.  I'm assuming a few things:

  • You are running macOS Ventura.
  • You've updated the macOS to the latest update.
  • You've downloaded and installed the latest Microsoft Edge.
  • You've at least run Edge once such that it bounced in the Dock, then stopped.

The following things I'd try next are:

  • Open the Applications folder in Finder & right-click on the Edge icon and choose Open.
  • Manually create ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge with full permits for current user.

It should look something like this:

The last thing I would try is to create a new local account, try Edge and the previous solution in there, and see if that works.  If it does, then there is an issue with your user profile.

If that doesn't fix it, I'm out of ideas for now and Microsoft Devs need to step in and offer a solution.

Hope this helps.  Good luck.

As it turns out, I'd made a bonehead mistake...I downloaded Edge for Intel chip instead of Apple M1 (who knew?!) Once I installed the correct version, it all works fine.

Thanks for your help!

@RxWiz

I'm glad to read all is well now. I was just about to update my entry to point that very thing out. 🙂

Have a great day bud.
