BUG: M1 Mac Edge Beta hard crash, VTDecoderXPCService high memory usage

Copper Contributor

Issue:

MS Edge Beta Version: Version 90.0.810.1 (Official build) Dev (64-bit)

Playing videos in MS Edge Beta on an M1 Mac crashes the machine. I tried a few different videos and this seems to be easy to reproduce on my machine.

Steps to repro:

  1. Open Activity Monitor
  2. Click on the Memory tab
  3. Goto to this link: Aliens: Fireteam Squads Up in 25 Minute PS5, PS4 Gameplay Demo - Push Square
  4. Play the video
  5. Watch for VTDecoderXPCService memory grow
  6. Computer crashes after a few minutes

Result:

Hard crash. Have to force reboot the computer

Work around:

Use the current stable version of MS Edge: Version 89.0.774.45 (Official build) (64-bit)

Computer details:

  • Big Sur Version: 11.2.2
  • Model Name: MacBook Pro
  •   Model Identifier: MacBookPro17,1
  •   Chip: Apple M1
  •   Total Number of Cores: 8 (4 performance and 4 efficiency)
  •   Memory: 8 GB
  •   System Firmware Version: 6723.81.1

Enclosed:

Thanks!

This occurs on my M1 MBA as well, though the machine does not entire crash. Rather, the VTDecoder process is restarted by MacOS which momentarily interrupts the video playback and I get an "out of memory" notification from the OS. This cycle then continuously repeats as video playback continues.
