PUBLIC PREVIEW: Announcing public preview of Multimedia Redirection (MMR) for AVD

We are excited to announce that the public preview of Multimedia Redirection (MMR) for AVD! MMR gives you smooth video playback in your Azure Virtual Desktop browser and works with Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. Before MMR, media was rendered once in the Azure VM and then again in the remote client. With Multimedia Redirection enabled, we remote the media element from the browser to the local machine, saving significant work in the VM. We have measured significant savings to the cloud CPU.

The documentation to deploy Multimedia Redirection in AVD will guide you through the necessary steps needed to enable this feature. 

Do note: At the start of public preview we have limited access by default to http://www.youtube.com as we work on a generic occlusion solution. To test internal website with MMR and other sites, click on the extension icon in the browser  and check Enable for all sites (experimental). Please see documentation for further details.

 

Throughout public preview we will update this post as new functionality comes online, like MMR working on all sites by default.
