Polybase on Synapse analytics

Hi Team, 

I  wanted to check whether we can connect to onprem SQL server via polybase from Azure Synapse analytics ?

I am looking for a kind of virtualization solution to access the onprem sql server data and join with the data in Azure storage container. Since we have synapse ecosystem, i thought we can use polybase to connect both the source for data exploration. I dont want to copy the data in to cloud (like the new linked service for SQL does).. Please let me know a) is it possible to connect the onprem sql server via polybase from synapse ( I see we can can connect from SQL Server 2022 using polybase ) b ) Is there any other Azure services that i can use to connect both onprem data and cloud storage data and query (like AWS Athena)
