In prior years, if you were on certain subscription types you were not able to create SQL Managed Instance and experience 100% SQL server database engine compatibility with all the benefits of a fully managed and evergreen platform as a service. Now, anyone can create SQL MI for free with only an email and Azure account.
From now on, the following subscription types will be able to create SQL Managed Instance:
In the following Azure regions:
- West US 2
- South Central US
- UK South
- Souteast Asia
- West Europe
- East US
- Australia East
- North Europe
- Sweden Central
In case you are on a subscription with limited credits, you will want to utilize Start/Stop feature when it becomes generally available to extend the number of hours you run SQL Managed Instance for.
