Upgrading your database can be a complex process, especially for critical workloads. If you’re still running an older version of PostgreSQL and aren’t ready to upgrade just yet, you’re not alone. To help, we’re introducing Extended Support for Azure Database for PostgreSQL as a paid offering. It keeps your workloads secure and supported, even after your PostgreSQL version reaches community end-of-life (EOL).

What Is Extended Support?

When the PostgreSQL community ends support for a version, no further security patches or bug fixes are released. But we know your workloads still need to run reliably and securely.

With Azure Extended Support:

  • Automatic enrollment happens one month after community EOL.
  • Automatic exit happens once your server is upgraded to a supported version or after three years, whichever comes first.

Extended Support provides:

  • Up to three additional years of support after community EOL
  • Security patches and critical bug fixes maintained by Microsoft
  • Continued technical support through your existing Azure support plan

Who Is It For:

Extended Support is designed for customers who:

  • Need more time to plan and test upgrades
  • Operate in regulated industries where patching is critical
  • Cannot upgrade by the PostgreSQL community EOL date

How to Use It Effectively

Extended Support is a temporary bridge, not a long-term solution. We recommend you:

  1. Plan upgrades early - Evaluate your current deployments of PostgreSQL 11, 12, and 13, and consider upgrading them to supported versions like PostgreSQL 17, which supports in-place upgrades.
  2. Use the time wisely - Test thoroughly to reduce transition risks.
  3. Upgrade before Extended Support ends - see upgrade documentation for guidance.

Why It Matters

Extended Support helps you:

  • Keep workloads secure after community support ends
  • Maintain business continuity
  • Access technical support when you need it
