Navigate changing markets and accelerate growth with Azure

Over the last couple of years, new patterns have emerged as drivers for businesses considering moving their infrastructures, workloads, and applications to the cloud. A central theme is that organizations have realized the importance of being more agile, capable of anticipating disruptions and pivoting to address rapidly changing macroeconomic conditions. It's more important than ever for businesses to be prepared for economic events on a global scale that could potentially affect long-term growth.

Whether an organization has increasing cyber-security concerns or wants to save on IT infrastructure costs, ensure business continuity, or weather a potential economic recession, Microsoft provides options that businesses can use to be more resilient, navigate changing markets, and accelerate growth. By migrating and modernizing their data estate to Azure, businesses can do more with less by using integrated solutions that reduce costs, bring access to industry-leading security features, and take advantage of existing skillsets.

Migrate and modernize to open-source databases on Azure

On-premises infrastructures require significant costs from hardware, subscriptions, and skilled staff to maintain a database. The expenses for IT resources and infrastructure go away when organizations move Azure.¹ Cloud database services on Azure allow companies to focus on developing applications and growing their businesses instead of having to manage databases. Migrating and modernizing to the cloud is a cost-effective way to streamline application development, save, improve business agility, and become a more mature data-driven business.

Microsoft’s open-source database portfolio includes fully managed services for MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MariaDB, based on the community versions of these databases. These database services automate management of the database and its underlying infrastructure, removing the need to take care of day-to-day database management tasks so that organizations can focus on innovation and business growth instead.

Open-source database services on Azure have built-in intelligence, cost optimization controls, as well as customized recommendations for improved performance and intelligent scalability. Flexible Server, a deployment option for Azure Databases for PostgreSQL and MySQL, offers benefits including maximum control over databases with custom maintenance windows, more options for high availability to ensure zero data loss for mission critical applications, and a simplified developer experience that accelerates end-to-end deployments.

As organizations look to modernize and support their businesses through successful digital transformation efforts, they can expect to benefit from streamlined operations, reduced operational costs, and improved business agility with Azure’s fully managed open-source database services.

Save up to 62% on total cost with open-source databases on Azure

Microsoft partnered with the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) to validate the cost savings, operational efficiency, improved developer experience, and enhanced business agility that customers have reported after migrating their on-premises, open-source MySQL and PostgreSQL workloads to the fully managed Azure services for MySQL and PostgreSQL.

To perform the study, ESG conducted several in-depth interviews with customers, developed a three-year modeled scenario, and completed a quantitative economic analysis to validate the benefits that organizations can expect when migrating to Azure.

Top-level findings from ESG’s model showed that Azure Database for PostgreSQL provides up to a 62% lower total cost over a three-year period to deliver the services to host, secure, and manage PostgreSQL databases, as well as $11.6 million in additional revenue as a result of faster times to market.² Additionally, ESG found that organizations can also reduce operational overhead up to 84% by allowing developers to focus on developing applications rather than managing or tuning databases.² (Full report)

The findings for Azure Database for MySQL were also robust, showcasing savings of up to a 48% lower total cost versus databases running on-premises and an additional $15.5 million in revenue from the built-in cost optimization advantages this database-as-a-service provides.³ According to ESG’s model, organizations can also eliminate up to 93% of total operational overhead costs when developers can focus on app innovation instead of database administration tasks.³ (Full report)

ESG also noted that on-premises deployments typically overprovision hardware to handle the worst-case utilization scenarios for all instances, but that PostgreSQL and MySQL on Azure provide cost-saving strategies to address this based on performance and scalability requirements, required uptime, and usage patterns. For example, customers can save with burstable compute instances instead of managing underutilized instances, or they can leverage one- or three-year reserved instances in place of 24x7 steady state instances.

Today’s modern organizations are choosing fully managed open-source database services on Azure to achieve significant cost savings and operational benefits while also benefitting from faster time to market using accelerating application development and delivery capabilities. Azure Databases for PostgreSQL and MySQL help businesses reduce cost and optimize security, availability, and performance while maximizing the productivity of IT resources.
