What is the due diligence for verifying nonprofits?
I know that before donating, funding, or partnering with a nonprofit, a few minutes of due diligence can prevent costly mistakes. But what steps can one take to verify that a nonprofit is legitimate, financially transparent, and actually doing what it claims? Are there AI and API tools one can use for this?

I think nonprofit due diligence should shift from “Is this charity legitimate?” to “Can I verify its identity, filings, finances, and claims quickly enough to make a confident decision?”
The IRS currently lists 1,957,340 tax-exempt organizations. This shows why manual verification becomes difficult when donations or partnerships involve many organizations. Tools like the Nonprofit Check Plus API has made that first verification layer much faster for so many people over time. The deeper due diligence focus is now on impact, governance, and financial health.

See charitynavigator.org, for one notable example.
