Windows Information Protection expands support for Office desktop client applications

We know how easy it is to accidentally leak sensitive business information to unauthorized locations and people: according to Stroz Friedberg, 57% of us have sent email with business data to the wrong person.[1] More sobering is the fact 87% of senior managers admit to regularly uploading work files to a personal email or cloud account.[2]

In August, we announced our support of Windows Information Protection (WIP) for Office mobile apps for Windows tablets and phones. A part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, WIP helps prevent accidental data leaks while letting users maintain control over their personal data.

We’re pleased to announce that Office has expanded its support for WIP to now include the Office 365 ProPlus desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Skype. This will help provide more comprehensive protection of your business data on Windows devices. WIP allows IT administrators to apply rules to recognize business data as it is generated by selected business applications, control how business data can be used and define which rights a user has. This allows IT to either help block leaks or, optionally, help warn the user before content is copied to unauthorized websites and personal documents.

Equally important, WIP provides greater IT control with a seamless experience for users. Once WIP recognizes business data as it arrives on the device or is generated by business applications, data protection takes place completely behind the scenes. The user is only notified when they’re attempting to take an unauthorized action.

To get started with WIP in desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, and Skype, update to Office 365 ProPlus today. Learn how to create a WIP policy using Microsoft Intune and System Center Configuration Manager here. To see WIP in action watch the Microsoft Mechanics video below!
