Last week in Barcelona, thousands of representatives from DNS providers, service providers, governments, educational organizations, and more met to discuss the stable, secure, and resilient operation of the Internet. Microsoft was there, along with our partners in the Domain Connect open standard, to talk about how we’re making it easy for a user to configure DNS for a domain running at a DNS provider to work with a service running at an independent service provider.
What is Domain Connect?
Domain Connect automates many of the manual processes typically required for configuring web hosting, email, and other services. Domain Connect is an open standard published under the MIT license, designed and is maintained by a community of developers across multiple companies. The standard was submitted to the IETF as a draft. Microsoft has enabled this standard in Microsoft 365 to make it easy to integrate your Domain Connect enabled domains with your Microsoft 365 subscription.
What happened at ICANN?
Representatives from Microsoft, 1&1, GoDaddy, Google, HubSpot, and WP Engine were onsite to talk about the ease of using Domain Connect enabled services and registrars, as well as working with service providers and registrars directly to help them onboard to the open standard to provide a better experience to their users. Domain Connect was represented in a booth on the expo floor and in a panel discussion.
Where can you find Domain Connect enabled providers?
The list of Domain Connect enabled service providers and DNS providers has grown rapidly since its inception in 2014. If you’re an end-user, we published blog on how to use Domain Connect to enable your Microsoft 365 services with your custom domain.
Domain Connect is ultimately about providing the best possible experience to the end user, regardless of the service or DNS provider. Microsoft saw a noticeable increase in customer NPS after implementing Domain Connect, and customers were vocal about their support for it. Speaking about Microsoft’s support for Domain Connect with 1&1, one customer said, “You've got it setup to auto-magically update my 1&1 DNS Records for Outlook 365? SWEET!!!” Likewise, WP Engine saw a 32% reduction in DNS configuration support cases coming from DNS providers using the Domain Connect protocol, freeing up approximately 100 support hours each month.
