In nearly all microsoft applications both desktop and web-based, the bars at the top are almost entirely wasted space. I've attached an example on outlook with a quick before and after of what I believe would be better.
Not only would it look much better, but it would give the rest of the app more screen real estate. Nearly every Microsoft application has this issue in some form.
