Currently we cannot control or resize the width of the task pane in new outlook or on the web.
We have a requirement to resize the width of the task pane programmatically as this will facilitate the easier display of various content, whether large or small.
Please consider this as a feature request for adding support to control the width of the task pane programmatically.

Any update? Customers are requesting a smaller size of the add-in to improve real estate while working.
We really need this functionality - any updates on it being available? We have rewritten a VSTO add-in and there is not enough room to display the data and the users want to be able to resize the add-in.

Outlook Extensibility is currently evaluating the feature to allow resizing of the add-in taskpane on Outlook web and New Outlook for Windows.
