Thank you for joining us this week for the Windows Server Summit! Q&A is now closed, but all sessions are available on demand so you can watch and learn when it is convenient for you. We hope you enjoyed the event.
- iotorrezCopper ContributorAre there any release dates for Windows Server 2025?
- Elden_Christensen
Microsoft
Looking back, we historically release Windows Server LTSC releases every 2 - 3 years. Windows Server 2025 will be generally available in the second half of this year.
- Excelent content! Thanks!
- Mark BurlandBrass ContributorI love that one of the big new features is "Open a terminal session..." Welcome to 2024 everybody. Self-driving cars, self-undressing aircraft, AI written movies, terminal first in IT because we are stuck in the stone age.
- mashdkCopper ContributorWill we finaly see FIDO2 passthrough from Hyper-V host to VM in WS2025?
- khamidatouOccasional ReaderI've heard before that WS2025 is the last version of Windows Server in Microsoft plan, is that right? then Microsoft will push all users to use AZ solutions
- What do you think Azure runs on?
- Elden_Christensen
Microsoft
What a silly statement for someone to say, that is completely false!!- B4ArtBrass ContributorI think there is a misunderstanding. Azure is 2-fold. On premise "Azure Stack" via Hardware Vendor and in the Cloud "Azure" via Microsoft.
- AndrewTIron ContributorWith "Windows Server Datacenter: Azure Edition" having a more frequent release schedule... Is the OS upgrade process (Say from still the as the traditional Windows Server upgrades where it needs to fully stage the new OS to the disk and then have a long offline time? Or does is work more like the "Enablement Package" system we have on the Windows client OS?
- AndrewTIron ContributorFor anyone reading this in the future, this was pretty much answered in this session - https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-server-events/windows-server-2025-the-upgrade-and-update-experience/ev-p/4080229 For now Feature Updates are still the same "In Place Upgrade" process as it was, except you can now deploy the feature updates as an update via WSUS as you have been able to on Windows Client for a while. This looks (for now) to be the same on Azure Edition, Azure Edition 2022 to 2025 is a "Feature Update" so it would be that full process. Ned P also replied saying this may change in the future though!
- NedPyleBronze ContributorWe're actually looking into some changes here for WS2025, but I can't share details yet. More info to come.
- Ivan SeriavinCopper ContributorA lot of new and really great enhancements. Is there a chance that some of the older existing tools would also get some attention, i.e. ability to configure gMSA as a runas account for a service or a scheduled task in MMC? Also, I've been always wondering how powerful should my server be to make the task history tab (in MMC) load a bit faster than in a minute or two?
- Excellent congrats!!!
- Cpanter305Copper ContributorWindows Server licensing is moving to a subscription model? Is there any insight into how this would look in practice?
- exchange12rocksIron ContributorWindows Server has been available by a subscription model for a long time: SPLA

Microsoft
thanks for your interest to Windows Server licensing. It's important to note will continue to offer perpetual licenses as we have in the past, no changes there. We are adding new flexible subscription models for those who would prefer that model. Please stay tuned for more details in the coming months.
